Job DescriptionTHE ROLEReporting directly to the Sonoma County CAO, the Executive Director, Nursing for Petaluma Valley Hospital and Healdsburg Hospital, has responsibility for the operation of the Professional Nursing Practice within Acute Care Services. Administers all aspects of nursing operations. Creates and manages an environment to provide safe, effective, and high quality, values based patient care in a fiscally responsible manner through direction, support, and development of direct reports and nursing staff, and through work with the medical staff and management staff of other divisions. Assures development of patient care policies and procedures, standards of care, standards of practice and standards to measure, assess and improve patient outcomes.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Plans, administers and evaluates patient care programs and nursing operations.
- Participates in the organization's long range planning, goal development, strategic initiatives and designing of patient care services and programs with the senior management team, medical staff, board and other clinical leaders.
- Plans, implements and evaluates patient care programs based on regulatory standards, external benchmarks, research findings, literature and internal standards.
- Developing and implementing organization-wide patient care programs, policies and procedures that describe how patients' nursing care needs are assessed, evaluated and met.
- Assures the development, review, and approval of patient care programs, standards, protocols and procedures that are consistent with current nursing research, professional standards and current professional literature, and describe how patients' care needs are assessed, evaluated and met.
- Assures a sufficient number of qualified nursing staff are provided to meet patients' care requirements by developing and implementing the organization's plan for providing nursing care to those patients requiring nursing care.
- Implementing an effective ongoing performance improvement program in collaboration with other departments and medical staff to continuously improve patient care services.
- Assures nursing staff are competent by supporting training and competency programs and by acting as a resource to Directors and Managers regarding performance management.
- Utilizes team building strategies to develop cohesive work groups, promote teamwork and collaboration to enhance communication and problem solving to improve patient care.
- Responsible for coordinating, planning and managing the annual budget for patient care departments in collaboration with department directors.
- Participates as a member of St. Joseph Health System's Patient Care Executive Council in policy decisions affecting patient care services at relevant levels of corporate decision making within the system.
- Ensures that staff possesses the appropriate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to the age of the patients served, including knowledge of the principles of growth and development and psycho-social characteristics and interventions for the population served on the unit.
- Ensures that staff is competent in assessing and interpreting age appropriate data about the patients' in order to provide the care needed.
- Ensures that staff possesses the appropriate communication skills for the patient population served.
- Ensures that staff demonstrates knowledge of age-specific community resources and continually updates staff appropriately.
- May engage in public speaking periodically.
- May serve as administrator-on-call.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or other health care related degree (Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree must be in Nursing)
- Master's Degree in Nursing or other health care related degree (Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree must be in Nursing)
- Master's Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or a related field (preferred)
- Upon hire: California Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed)
- 10 or more years of progressive management experience in Nursing and Patient Care Services
- 3 years of experience in Administration or nurse executive position in similar size or larger facility
- Flexibility and the ability to prioritize multiple projects and work time as required
- Proven ability to work well with individuals and groups
- Requires ability to work with diverse populations of all ages
- Knowledgeable in the principles of human resources administration, quality improvement, and JCAHO standards
- Effective budgetary planning and administrative skills
- Strong supervisory/management and leadership skills
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships within and without the organization
- Effective public speaking skills, as well as ability to develop and conduct effective presentations
- Knowledge and utilization of computer applications (Windows software)
- Knowledge of and ability to use accounting methods and interpretation of statistical data.
