The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.Position SummaryReporting to the Chief Operations Officer and working collaboratively with SIPA-IT, the Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration, and other members of the School, the Executive Director leads the development and school-wide adoption of a data governance policy and system alignment. The Executive Director will create and oversee a business analytics team for the school to ensure the ongoing development of a holistic digital ecosystem that enables real-time reporting, and ensure data is captured and shared with the central university systems of record. They will also be responsible for identifying what systems align with unit needs and complement the ongoing development of the school-wide digital ecosystem. As the School's chief data officer, the Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing the digital strategic plan of the school as it pertains to data and analytics across all programs and departments, focused on managing all systems to increase efficiency and productivity and reduce risk with the utmost cost effectiveness. The Executive Director is both a strategic leader responsible for SIPA's data architecture and a technologist capable of engaging in hands on technical execution. The Executive Director will collaborate closely with SIPA-IT and Columbia University IT (CUIT) in planning, deploying, and maintaining SIPA's data information systems and operations, including oversight of the Analytics team budget.Working in collaboration with the Director of Analytics the incumbent will implement a robust data collection and analysis capability at SIPA and direct data governance efforts. They will ensure there is consistency of reporting, monitoring, and evaluation of our efforts that are in line with our central administrative systems, Student Information Systems and Finance, and Administration (PAC, SIS and ARC). The incumbent has hands-on experience with implementation of projects involving database products such as Salesforce, Snowflake, Oracle and/or MS SQL Server. They will be responsible for the successful implementation of school-wide data governance policies while serving as the liaison with stakeholders and the Director of Analytics. The incumbent will be responsible for hiring and supervising the members of the Analytics team and coordinating with school leadership to ensure there is alignment with our organizational goals and data management systems. The Executive Director develops and maintains productive partnerships with program directors, administrative department heads, faculty, central University leadership, and external partners.ResponsibilitiesReporting (25%)Provide strategic planning, policy development and implementation, and potential business process modification and implementation to support key School needs and goals.Manage high-level target setting process for drivers and results tied to critical metrics of value creation (revenue, cash flow, expenses, etc.) and work with Finance to incorporate into budgeting and budget management processes.Provide data management and data-driven operational support to school-wide strategic decisions.Establish key performance metrics and incorporate into budgeting and day-to-day operations.Manage the School's strategic planning efforts in conjunction with the School's senior management team.Ensure internal and external data systems align in order for there to be effective and nimble reporting across all areas on the business.Lead and advise on the school's data information strategy (25%)Create and manage the day-to-day operations of the Analytics team.Develop and oversee the Analytics team budget.Plan, deploy and maintain data information systems and operations in coordination and partnership with SIPA-IT.Manage the organization's software development needs for data information systems.Develop data information policies, procedures, and best practices in collaboration with SIPA-IT and CUIT.Stay updated on IT trends and emerging technologies;Develop and enforce data management and usage best practices across the organization;Ensure data information strategies and processes support school-wide goals;Oversee relationships with vendors, contractors, and service providers for third-party systems; andDevelop a 3- and 5- year digital strategic plan that outlines the School's data and information strategy across programs and departments.Analytics (25%)Develop, implement, and direct data governance strategies and policies at the school that complements unit needs.Lead the development of new financial and program data resources, and improve the consistency of finance and program data across units of the School in concert with the Director of Analytics.Spearhead outreach efforts to identify and provide financial and program data analysis needed by decision-makers in the programs and administrative departments.Direct efforts to ensure school-wide adoption of new data platforms, including access management, training, and alignment with existing systems and reporting platforms.Prepare and deliver high-level reports to key audiences to facilitate decision-making.Business process assessment and improvement (20%)Lead and execute business process assessment, recommend modifications, and direct the implementation in partnership with the Chief Operations Officer, in order to support key School needs and goals;Lead project management initiatives to realize the improvement if necessary.Performs other duties and special projects as assigned or requested (5%)Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree required.Minimum 7 years of related experience required.Demonstrated organizational and supervisory experience essential.Demonstrated leadership experience in financial planning and/or analytics.Hands-on experience with high-volume enterprise database solutions, from design to implementation, including ongoing maintenance and change management support.Extensive experience with database development/integration, analysis, and reporting.Must have the initiative and ability to start and complete projects with minimum direction as well as the ability to work as part of a team.Stellar analytical and strategic thinking skills with an ability to assess different scenarios and to develop useful management financial and program performance reports.Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities and work under deadlines required.Consultative skill-set with proven experience in client service.Strong project management, writing and editing, analytical, and interpersonal communication skills required.Preferred QualificationsMBA, MS in Data Science, or similar degree.Management consulting experience coupled with a proven consultative approach to solving business problems and addressing new opportunities highly desirable.Experience and in-depth knowledge of database architecture, system design and database query languages, such as SQL or SOQL.Experience working with higher education data.Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / VeteranColumbia University is committed to the hiring of qualified local residents.
