Job Description:

This position will provide leadership and programming for youth outreach components of the USU Bastian Center in South Jordan, Utah. They will facilitate the Utah informal science education enhancement (iSEE) presentations in Salt Lake County schools and other youth outreach efforts for the Botanical Center including coordination of the county youth programs as assigned. The program coordinator will be part of both the Informal Science Education Enhancement team and the Salt Lake County Youth Programs Team. They will facilitate educational activities in fifth grade classrooms throughout the county.

These programs will align with Utah education standards and be delivered using experiential learning. This position will work closely with Extension faculty and Coordinators in Salt Lake County and other parts of the state. The position is located at the USU Bastian Agricultural Center in South Jordan, UT. It is a 100% benefited position with 40 hours/week and will report to Extension Youth Programs STEM Faculty Member who manages the iSEE grant program for Utah State University. The position is contingent upon funds, need and performance.

  • Facilitate classroom visits in Salt Lake County and other areas as assigned for the USU Extension Informal Science Education Enhancement program, When Spheres Collide.
  • Advance the Extension Youth Programs efforts to provide quality, research-based field trips and other opportunities to youth and educators through STEM education using experiential learning.
  • Maintain accurate records of school participation in outreach programs.
  • Be part of a collaborative team to design and implement STEM outreach programs and teacher professional development.
  • Recruit, train, organize, assist and recognize volunteers to build and strengthen outreach programs.
  • Attend staff meetings; provide updates about program developments and events to various Extension teams.
  • Work with Salt Lake County faculty and staff to collaborate on Salt Lake County programming.
  • Provide oversight to the county-based youth programming as assigned.
  • Respond to requests, office visits, telephone calls, emails and other correspondence promptly and professionally.
  • Create and distribute promotional materials in the form of flyers, e-newsletters, webpage content, social media messaging, and more. Attend events to provide outreach.
  • Keep equipment and materials clean, organized, and in good working condition.
  • Assist with program assessment.
  • Support the Civil Rights mandate of Utah State University Extension and implement innovative approaches to reach diverse audiences.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies/Natural Resources, Youth Development, Agriculture, Education or other related field; OR four years related experience; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • High degree of self-motivation.
  • Ability to teach, manage and engage an audience (youth and/or adult).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to pleasantly interact with a wide variety of individuals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working with 4-H or youth experience
  • Experience with environmental education outreach
  • Program development, grant writing, and/or delivery of programs
  • Skills with youth and adult education
  • Experience with recruiting, supervising and working with volunteers
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish
  • Experience working with low income and under-served audiences
  • Knowledge of the Land Grant University system
  • First Aid Certification
  • Watershed Science related experience

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Strong organizational, time, and project management skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong computer and technology skills - Microsoft Office, Google docs, social media, etc.
  • Flexibility and adaptability responding to conditions (e.g. weather, COVID)
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.
  • Ability to travel throughout an area of responsibility consistent with university policy.
