Job Description:
Exterminators perform various activities engaged in the elimination of birds (pigeons), rodents and common household pests and insects. They are responsible for the prevention and destruction of small animal nuisances. At times, Exterminators must work at high elevation, raising and lowering equipment and traps in buildings, flour mills, grain elevators, church spires, roofs, etc. Incumbents have frequent contact with the general public and must be able to communicate effectively concerning problems of pest control. Specific work assignments are received and incumbents take whatever steps will best solve the problem. Supervision is received by on-the-job checks and a review of daily work reports.Destroys rats, mice and various household pests through the use of traps, guns, poison mixtures and gases;* upholds all City Ordinances pertaining to the elimination of animal nuisances;* issues summonses as required;Establishes and maintains an integrated pest management program;* distributes posters and literature dealing with the seriousness of the existence of pest and insect infested areas and the best methods of overcoming them;Performs preventive measures such as filling up rat holes, enclosing openings in buildings with wire mesh and metal sheeting;Captures birds (pigeons) through the use of traps and artificial lofts and delivers them to city pound for elimination;Assists in the removal of animals, including deer;Investigates complaints and advises as to how to best eliminate conditions found;Participates in and must complete required number of hours of in-house training in accordance with the Department of Environmental Conservation requirements;Maintains records, files and submit reports as required;Drives to and from work sites;Performs related work as required.Applicants must have two years of full-time experience where work involves the preventive and precautionary measures in the elimination of birds (pigeons), rodents and/or common household pests and insects.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSl. All applicants must possess EITHER at time of appointment OR within one year of date of appointment a Commercial Pesticide Applicator's Certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. This certificate must be in the category of pesticide application pertaining to the duties of the job title as specified by the regulations of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.2.All applicants must possess a current New York State Driver's License, which must be presented at time of appointment.3.Applicants who are appointed to the Department of Public Works, Parks and Streets must possess a Trapping/Nuisance Control License issued by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, which must be presented within one year of date of appointment.4.Applicants who are appointed to the Department of Public Works, Parks and Streets, must possess a Gun Permit, which must be presented within six months of date of appointment.NOTE: All of the above must be maintained during employment.Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements.Good knowledge of the habits of birds (pigeons), rodents and household pests and insects including the nesting, breeding places and feeding habits of such animals;Good knowledge of and the ability to use traps, guns, gases and poisons used in eliminating rodents, pigeons and household pests;* knowledge of the necessary steps used in taking prevented measures against small animal nuisances;Ability to follow oral and written instructions;Ability to get along well with others;Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
