Primary Purpose

Responsible for the management of the multidisciplinary ECMO program in collaboration with the ECMO manager. Serves as leadership support and alternates 24-hour call coverage with the ECMO manager. Oversees ECMO program development and participates in ECMO program education, outreach, and research activities. Coordinates ECMO specialist staffing and scheduling. The ECMO Coordinator manages all designated ECMO equipment and supplies in conjunction with the ECMO manager. Ensures all ECMO specialists are up to date on annual competencies, annual simulations, and wet lab requirements. Coordinates inter and intra-facility patient transports.

Minimum Specifications

Education

  • Must have a Bachelor's degree.

Experience

  • Must have three (3) years of critical care experience in ECMO/MCS platforms.
  • Preference is six (6) years or more of Critical Care experience in ECMO/MCS.

Certification/Registration/Licensure

  • Current and valid RN license or temporary RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing or
  • Licensed Perfusionist, or
  • Current and valid Respiratory Therapist license
  • Must have current Healthcare Provider CPR Certification must be from one of the following:
    • American Heart Association
    • American Red Cross
    • Military Training Network
  • Must have current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification on hire or placement in role. Certification must be from one of the following:
    • American Heart Association
    • American Red Cross
    • Military Training Network
    • Required Tests for Placement

Skills or Special Abilities

  • Must be capable of serving as a clinical resource for staff.
  • Must be an expert in their field of study.

Responsibilities

  • The responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position. The inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position.
  • Advises and counsels patients and patient's families placed on ECMO treatment. Obtains required consent forms and ensures completion and compliance of policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for providing patient's family education materials to ensure information is current and consistent with recent evidence.
  • Assists with staff scheduling to ensure there is ECMO service coverage in collaboration with leadership. Responsible for quality monitoring for patients receiving ECMO therapy.
  • Assists with developing curriculum for the training of ECMO specialists, nurses, and providers, delivering the training, and evaluating the competency on an ongoing basis.
  • Responsible for maintaining inventory control and working with leadership to ensure adequate supplies are readily available.
  • Monitors ECMO pump hours and reviews other information as established for the service.
  • Must maintain knowledge of all regulatory standards from multiple regulatory bodies and incorporate them into processes and procedures for the ECMO program.
  • Collaborates with other providers in the quality monitoring and research activities related to ECMO. Responsible for data entry and maintenance of ELSO and home registry.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, not limited to ECMO-specific tasks. Functions in ES role 51% of the time.
  • Job Accountabilities

    • Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.
    • Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
    • Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence to applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
