We're seeking an experienced technician to join our team of Facilities Maintenance Mechanics. In this role, you'll be responsible for performing responsible, skilled work in repair, construction, and maintenance of Cary facilities.

You'll be instrumental in ensuring the reliability and functionality of Cary facilities by addressing preventative maintenance, plumbing concerns, electrical issues, and/or other building maintenance responsibilities. We rely on our maintenance mechanics to handle challenging problems. You may also lead a team on specific projects, when needed.

Our ideal candidate will be very knowledgeable in building maintenance, allowing them to work independently as a technical resource to the division. They must also possess excellent communication and collaboration skills.

The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic works independently with general supervision from a Facilities Team Lead or Facilities Work Expeditor. This work may be require weekend work, flexed or rotating on-call schedules.Responds to work requests, determines problems, and performs necessary repairs;

Performs preventative maintenance;

Handles maintenance problems;

Performs renovations, upgrades and repairs to plumbing equipment; unstops clogged drains, stops plumbing leaks, repairs and installs parts in toilets, urinals and sinks and other plumbing fixtures;

Checks functions of boilers, chillers, and valves;

Inspects facilities/playgrounds, ensures compliance with ADA and National Playground Safety Institute (NPSI) requirements;

Coordinates the closing of playgrounds for repairs and installation of new equipment; coordinates the purchasing of new playground equipment;

Handles warranty repairs on playground equipment;

May train other employees in trades and safety procedures;

Maintains level of knowledge of trades and procedures through various training classes;

Assists with new installations, upgrades and repairs to electrical equipment at buildings and facilities; replaces faulty switches, outlets, lighting ballasts and major appliances;

Performs carpentry renovations; upgrades and repairs walls, floors, doors and ceilings;

Applies appropriate stains, weatherproofing compound or related materials for the protection or enhancement of Cary's buildings; applies interior and exterior paint on a variety of surfaces;

Provides technical support, setup, takedown, and cleanup as assigned for Cary events;

Assists with collection of cost information to provide accurate quotes;

Responsible for collection and accuracy of work order data;

Installs and repairs fences as needed;

Serves as consultants to outside contractors;

Assists other divisions as needed;

Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Conducts specialized training in lock out/tag out and/or other electrical issues;

Arranges training opportunities for staff; provides direct training to staff; assists with the Division's compliance with lock out/tag out and electrical safety;

Assists in performing research for maintenance requirements;

Orders and maintains specialty equipment and supplies;

Leads small projects for facility upgrades and repair;

Provides cost projections, plans and schedules projects through Facilities Team Leader, Work Expeditor, Coordinator or Project Specialist;

Oversees or leads the work of personnel performing work;

Handles special projects including developing bid specifications, working with contractors, and inspecting the work of contractors;

Locates parts, materials, and supplies required for maintenance operations;

Inspects work of contracted service providers;

Handles special maintenance or repair projects;

Responsible for accountability of Division equipment and tools;

Ensures facilities are secure, responds to emergency and after hour calls as needed;

Performs inspections of Cary facilities for maintenance requirements to meet facility standards;

Transports specialized equipment;

Accountable for key security of Cary staff;

Makes keys for Cary facilities, keys and repairs locks and make recommendations on type of locks used for replacement and new construction;

Handles issues and questions from the public and Cary staff;

Provides accurate work order data for independent work or assigned staff;

Participates in hazardous weather or emergency response;

Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Considerable knowledge of the practice, principles and techniques associated with all building trades including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC; Considerable knowledge of the operation of hand tools, power tools and knowledge of various materials and equipment used in general construction and maintenance work; Considerable knowledge of safety practices associated with construction trades; Considerable skill in the performance of duties in multiple trades; Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Ability to work effectively in a team environment; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with staff and the general public; Ability to communicate effectively; Ability to provide direction to a small team; Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time.

Physical Requirements

Work in this class is medium to heavy work and may require exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, and rain.

An employee must have the physical agility to move about freely including climbing stairs and ladders, walking for long periods and the endurance necessary to operate equipment.

Moderate to heavy lifting is required in performing the work.

Visual acuity is necessary to perform paperwork, read gauges, and make repairs. An employee must also be able to hear, talk, and smell.

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and 5 years of experience in all of the building trades.

Requires a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record

National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS100 and ICS700 training/certification required (provided)

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment
