Job Summary
William Carey University, a Christian liberal arts institution committed to academic excellence, seeks a qualified individual to provide mass communication and media instruction in the Department of Theatre and Communication. This full-time, non-tenure track position comes with a 12-month contract, allowing completion of the teaching load within 9 months. The teaching load consists of a minimum of 30 regular semester hours based on a two-year course rotation, covering concentrations in Electronic Media News and Production and Public Relations. As the program evolves, there is a growing focus on new media technologies and emerging platforms such as social media, podcasting, and digital content creation.
Duties and Responsibilities
Courses to teach include (on a rotating basis) Survey of the Mass Media, Writing for the Media, Principles of Public Relations, Introduction to Audio/Video Production, Mass Communication theory, News Reporting, Feature Writing, Public relations Writing, Copy Editing, Media Layout and Design, Mass Communication research, Media Ethics and law, Case Studies in Public Relations, Public Relations Campaigns, Electronic Journalism/Production Workshop, Seminar in Mass Communication, and Communication Internship.
Applicants must be willing to engage in new course/curriculum development for emerging new media (social media, podcasting, etc.), which is to be a main area of focus for the future of the department.
Other responsibilities include -
* Collaborating with other department faculty in curriculum development and departmental planning
* Create Learning Outcomes which meet and maintain SACS Accrediting Standards and Learning Outcomes from year to year
* Provide required reports (class schedules, employee evaluation) in a timely manner
* Assist with placement of students in internships and provide supervision
* Select and order appropriate instructional materials for all classes
* Provide, administer, and supervise practicum hours (COM 222, 422)
* Provide, administer, and supervise Directed Readings and Independent Studies where appropriate
* Assisting with recruitment of new students
* Advising and mentoring students
* Create and direct innovate growth toward New Media curriculum
* Serve on appointed university committees
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
* Candidates must have a strong commitment to Christian higher education and be actively involved in a Christian faith community. William Carey University faculty are encouraged to participate in the life of the university via attendance at campus activities and events, university chapel services, committee participation, and local community involvement.
* Other technical qualifications include:
* Basic computing skills (email, MS Word, etc.) are required
* Proficiency in Adobe Premiere and other video production tools, like studio, field, and/or multi-camera productions are required
* The candidate must be organized and able to supervise/mentor student workers:
* Organizing work with specific deadlines and goals
* Communicating with students about specific needs
* Maintaining a clean and productive work environment
* Supervise the learning studio space
* The candidate will oversee the maintenance of equipment and supply needs for studio.
* The candidate will travel to various conferences/festivals for recruitment, participation, and educational development.
* The candidate must have a valid driver's license
Educational Requirements
* Earned doctorate in journalism, communication or related field preferred. ABD is acceptable provided the candidate has a clear plan to complete the degree requirements.
* Candidates with a master's degree in a related field plus professional experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
* Prior teaching experience highly desirable, but not required.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience or willingness to learn various software and applications standard in the industry.
* At least 1 - year teaching experience
Physical Demands
* Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting, and to use standard office equipment including a computer and 10-key calculator
* Must have vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone
* Must have the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
* Must have strength and agility to move files, paper boxes, and minor office equipment
* Must be able to drive extended periods as required for attendance to recruiting events or conferences.
