Job Description:
The Family Educator works with families in a home-visit setting to provide resources and referrals to assist with family goal setting and self-sufficiency. The person in this position works with other team members to provide services in the areas of: education, health, nutrition, disabilities accommodation, family services, and parental involvement. The Family Educator assists families in becoming an advocate for their children by encouraging involvement in their education. This person will support families in becoming active members of their communities and active in their children's education.Candidates must submit applications by 11/18/24 to be considered for first-round interviews.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • Associate's degree in social work or a related field.
  • One year experience in social service delivery or case management.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION
  • Driver qualifications required for this position. Driver license, auto insurance and satisfactory drive record for the past 3 years are required.
  • Registration with the Central Background Registry of the Child Care Division.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • Food Handlers Card or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-physical examination.
  • Candidate must pass pre-employment and random drug/alcohol screenings.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Experience in early childhood education or Head Start programs preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiencies in Microsoft Office (Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel) and videoconferencing platforms.
  • Bilingual or multi-lingual skills may be required. Bilingual English-Spanish preferred.
    • To qualify as bilingual, staff must pass a bilingual exam demonstrating fluent speaking, reading, and writing in English and Spanish. Required bilingual staff will receive a pay differential based on language test results.

  • Supports families in obtaining child's physical and mental examination.
  • Assists families with obtaining and maintaining health insurance, medical home and dental home.
  • Supports program activities regarding health.
  • Effectively uses the ChildPlus system for collection and tracking child and family data.
  • Plans, organizes, and conducts child hearing, vision, and growth screenings for all enrolled children.
  • Ensures that screenings occur for each enrolled child within no later than 45 calendar days of each child's start date.
  • Performs re-screens for children who do not pass the initial screen and works with family and with members of the Content Area Team (CAT) to ensure that children are referred for professional evaluation.
Home Visits
  • Conducts at least two family service home visits per year with a total of 3 contact hours.
  • Assists guardians in establishing family goals and action plans; works with guardians and other agencies to coordinate and support goals from pre-existing plans.
  • Provides guardians with support in facilitating home learning activities that promote parent and child interactions and help children reach their educational goals.
  • Assists guardians in establishing family goals and action plans.
  • Maintains ongoing documentation of communication with families.
Parental Involvement and Meetings
  • Partners with guardians/providers to organize monthly guardian meetings; supports and trains guardians to facilitate meetings.
  • Utilizes parent input and program requirements to partner with community agencies to arrange guest speakers for parent meetings.
  • Develops a system to ensure regular communication regarding parent involvement.
  • Recruits, trains and mentors volunteers.
Eligibility, Recruitment, Selection, Enrollment and Attendance (ERSEA)
  • Monitors and utilizes procedures for child attendance and works with families to maintain an 85% attendance rate.
  • Updates forms as necessary to document changes to family demographics.
  • Completes paperwork to facilitate dropping or transferring children.
Resource and Referral
  • Assists families in accessing community and agency resources.
  • Supports families so that children receive developmental, sensory, medical, dental, mental health, nutritional and behavioral screening and follow up services as required.
  • Completes follow-up with families to evaluate if the resource or referral met the need of the family.
Agency and Community Meetings
  • Participates in agency meetings and training.
  • Attends additional meetings to support families as needed.
  • Attends community meetings to support the family, including Early Intervention and Team Decision Meetings with Child Welfare.
  • Attends community meetings to build partnerships with other programs that support children and families.
Team Support
  • Supports the guardians, childcare providers, centers, and classroom in areas including, providing classroom coverage, bus riding, language support, organization, and staffing of children and families and other areas as needed.
  • Complies with MWVCAA safety and personnel policies, including punctuality and attendance.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly lift and/or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Frequent driving to Agency and family home sites in Polk and Marion counties.
  • Requires planning, problem-solving, and resourcefulness with little direct supervision.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Indoor, office work environment with frequent interruptions and demands.
  • Close quarters, in a family's personal home setting.
  • Frequent interactions with vulnerable populations, including children.
