JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:The College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State is a world leader in agricultural research and learning. The Russell E. Larson Agricultural Research Center consists of 2200 acres and is integral to facilitating cutting-edge agronomic and horticultural crop research.The Farm Specialist must be collaborative and possess excellent management and communication skills to oversee technical service staff, manage cropland not in active research, and ensure a safe working environment.The successful candidate will be responsible for the following: Hire, manage, mentor, and evaluate technical service staff of approximately six.Coordinate daily resource allocation with farm leadership for time-sensitive research tasks.Manage all aspects of agronomic crop production on land not allocated for research.Manage regular maintenance of equipment and facilities.Coordinate landscape maintenance including mowing of all grass areas.Develop and facilitate farm equipment safety and regulatory compliance protocols.Ensure compliance with pesticide handling and storage regulations.Provide guidance and training for the operation of non-specialized research equipment.Coordinate purchasing of materials and supplies with farm leadership.Promote an inclusive work culture among all farm staff. Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree or higher plus 6 or more years of experience in crop production.Required to obtain a Pennsylvania public pesticide license within 6 to 8 months of hiring.Previous experience with farming and facilities operations.Knowledge of best management practices for crop, soil, and pest management.Strong supervisory and communication skills.Demonstrated ability to manage large projects.Ability to build and sustain positive working relationships.Ability to anticipate, perceive, diagnose, and remedy problems.Must be safety-oriented and adhere to all safety requirements. This position requires operating a motor vehicle as part of job duties.
