Job Description:
Fetal Cardiology Fellowship-Training Program

Obstetrics & Gynecology Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences, Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) at Old Dominion University.

The Division of MFM at EVMS, in collaboration with the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD), is seeking applications for a new one-year fellowship-training program in fetal cardiology. The start date is August 2025.

The MFM division at EVMS is the main regional referral site for pregnancies with suspected fetal congenital cardiac anomalies, with more than 2000 fetal echocardiograms performed annually, including detailed first trimester cardiac evaluations (11-14 weeks gestation). The MFM division is comprised of 10 faculty, highly skilled sonographers with ARDMS certification in fetal echocardiography, genetic counselors, perinatal nurses, advanced practice providers, and research coordinators - all with a strong commitment to care. The MFM division also supports an ACGME-approved MFM fellowship program and a robust infrastructure conducive for clinical research activities.

The fellowship is intended to provide comprehensive education in fetal cardiology with intense hands-on training in fetal echocardiography. The fellowship is designed to prepare a MFM physician for a career in academic medicine with significant expertise in the diagnosis and management of pregnancies with fetal cardiovascular abnormalities. Advanced training in fetal echocardiography will include emerging ultrasound technologies such as three- and four-dimensional imaging, advanced fetal cardiac function assessment, and first-trimester cardiac imaging. It is anticipated that the graduated fellow will have sufficient technical and clinical expertise to lead a fetal cardiology program in a MFM setting.

  • The fellow is expected to gain hands-on experience in transabdominal and transvaginal (early gestation) fetal echocardiography and expertise in the assessment of a broad spectrum of structural and functional fetal heart disease and fetal arrhythmias.
  • Participate and lead in counseling as well as prenatal, perinatal, and neonatal management planning of affected pregnancies.
  • Conduct one to two research initiatives under the direct mentorship of faculty and present the research at national and/or international scientific conferences.
  • Participate in formal and informal teaching sessions for the MFM fellows and sonographers and lead multidisciplinary meetings related to prenatal diagnosis and perinatal/neonatal management planning of pregnancies with complex fetal cardiovascular malformations.
  • Eligible candidates must have completed an ACGME-accredited fellowship in MFM. All inquiries and applications will be held in the strictest confidence and will be reviewed as they are received. Applicants should send their curriculum vitae and 2 letters of recommendation by email to Dr. Elena Sinkovskaya, fellowship director (...@evms.edu) and Jennifer Novsak, program coordinator (...@evms.edu). Candidates may call Dr. Sinkovskaya at 757-###-####. The interviews will be scheduled via Zoom.

EVMS is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer of Minorities, Females, Individuals with Disabilities, and Protected Veterans and is a Drug and Tobacco Free workplace.
