Incumbents are subject to call out after-hours for emergency repairs and must be willing to work overtime as required.
Applicants are required to submit a cover letter and resume.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:- Coordinates the maintenance of and enhancements to the city's outside plant fiber optic network.
- Performs highly specialized troubleshooting on fiber cables, switches, radios, and other communication-related equipment.
- Coordinates any fiber optic repair/replacement operations to ensure they are completed in accordance with city and industry standards and specifications.
- Maintains documentation regarding hardware repairs/upgrades, and software repairs/upgrades, and tracks all modifications to supported communication equipment.
- Ensures the City's Crescentlink fiber model accurately reflects the current state of the city's fiber optic network.
- Provides recommendations on the need for repair or replacement of supported communication equipment.
- Responds to inquiries or emergencies related to work adjacent to, in conflict with, or resulting in damage to the fiber-optic network.
- Performs quality fusion splicing and splice case audits to ensure reliability and accuracy.
- Performs after-hours, on-call responsibilities as needed in response to outages affecting the fiber optic system and radio networks.
- Effectively communicates with management, employees, other departments, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review the status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems; respond to requests for service or assistance.
- Participates in the development of goals, objectives, policies and procedures and makes recommendations for improvements to existing communication systems.
- Performs general/preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep supported communication systems/equipment in operable condition.
- Performs firmware updates on equipment associated with fiber optic network.
- Installs, configures and updates the software application that monitors the fiber network's operational status.
- Monitors and analyzes the reliability of the fiber optic networks on a routine basis.
- Recommends and specifies communication equipment and supplies for budget preparation.
- Recommends actions on matters related to the maintenance or upgrading of supported communications systems.
- Consults with System Engineering, external consultants, and contractors in the design, installation, and maintenance of the supported communication equipment.
- Organizes and conducts meetings with communication system users/operators to arrive at practical methods for meeting their communication needs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES - SUPERVISOR and/or LEADERSHIP EXERCISED: - Provides mentoring, leadership, guidance, and training to others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education, Training, and Experience GuidelinesAssociate's Degree from an accredited college, university or trade school with major coursework in Fiber Optics Technology, Electrical Technology, Electrical Communications, Computerized Control Systems, project management, or related field, and a minimum of four (4) years of experience in the repair, installation, and maintenance of communication system equipment.
OR A minimum of six (6) years of experience in a related field, including two (2) years of communication experience with a municipality.
KNOWLEDGE OF:- Fiber modeling using industry software.
- Fiber optic network installation practices, operation, and maintenance including splicing, testing, and auditing.
- Broadband and narrowband radio and other IP-based communication technologies.
- Fiber Optic Ring Topology networks.
- Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations pertaining to areas of responsibility.
- Industry safety practices.
- Microsoft Office applications. Primarily, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and Visio.
SKILL IN:- Coordinating efforts of third-party vendors.
- Using computers, fusion splicers, optical power meters, OTDR, and related software programs.
- Applying mathematics, fiber optic theory, and/or mechanical functionality.
- Splicing, testing, auditing, and troubleshooting within fiber optic network systems.
- Reading, interpreting, and analyzing professional journals, technical procedures, governmental regulations, construction drawings, diagrams, splice diagrams, and manufacturer's instruction books.
- Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Creating and maintaining accurate records and reports.
- Carrying out oral or written instructions.
- Reading and obeying workplace rules and procedures.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:Valid Class C Texas driver's licenseCertified Optic Technician (CFOT) or any related certification or the ability to obtain CFOT within one (1) year of start date.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:Standing, climbing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls.Work is often performed outdoors in possibly inclement weather conditions.
Hiring Range: $32.97 - $41.31, hourly
