Overview:

Hiring one research technician to assist with fire ecology research. The technician will work on several projects, including work along the Wasatch front, the Uintas, and Brian Head. Field work will consist of collecting forestry/vegetative data, placing soil moisture probes, and post-fire monitoring with the possibility of remote, steep, and rugged terrain under variable weather conditions. A positive attitude and willingness to learn will be crucial. The position is based out of Logan, UT and transportation to the field sites is provided.

Responsibilities:

Field work will consist of collecting forestry/vegetative data, placing soil moisture probes, and post-fire monitoring with the possibility of remote, steep, and rugged terrain under variable weather conditions. Lab work will consist of data entry, processingsamples and data, and doing basic data organization and analysis.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a valid drivers license
  • Must be able to travel away from Logan overnight for extended hitches, flexibility with scheduling may be necessary
  • Camping experience is required.
  • Must be able to maintain a good attitude while carrying a pack across steep and rugged terrain
  • Must have effective communication skills
  • Ability to show respect for fellow crew members is a must

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience on a field research crew
  • Knowledge/interest in the principles and techniques of ecology, including spp. ID
  • Experience with basic ecology tools/techniques: fuels transects, cover estimates, density, diameter tapes etc.
  • Experience with navigation by compass and/or GPS
  • Data entry and analysis, including spreadsheets, R, and database software
  • Backcountry first aid skills, such as Wilderness First Aid certification

    Advertised Salary:$18.00 per hourADA:

    The environment and physical requirements may change depending on the specific function of the work performed. Incumbents may be in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, in an office space, event space, or public space are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents may nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing).

    Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects up to 30 pounds and be required to walk over steep and rugged terrain and/or stand for long periods of time.
