Job Description:

Definitions:

To perform semi skilled work operating one of several types of light equipment used in road repair, mow, trim trees. Collect, load and dispose of debris and garbage from streets, alleys, drainage ditches, parks and recreation areas and other areas. This includes various types of common labor work in the maintenance or construction of streets and other public properties, and removal of garbage from city streets and alleys. Maintenance of parks and recreation fields and general labor at landfill. (See attached sheet examples of equipment).

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is the entry level class. Employees in this class are distinguished from the Equipment Operator I and II by the performance of more routine task assigned to the position including the performance of semi-skilled and unskilled labor work. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited work experience.

Supervision Received and Exercised:

Receives immediate supervision from the Operator, Operator I, II and III, Supervisor and Superintendent.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties may include but are not limited to the following.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operates small to light equipment. Performs minor maintenance or service checks on equipment. Performs unskilled and semi skilled labor work related to various maintenance and construction activities. Prepares a daily log of activities. Cleans and removes debris from streets, alleys, drainage ditches, and other areas. Mowing and weed trimming at parks and recreation areas, city rights of way, landfill access roads and perimeter fence.

Other important Duties and Responsibilities

Takes part in placement of barricades, signs, flashers and safety cones. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Work day and/or evening hours as needed.

Subject to after hours call out for emergency situations

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

Characteristics and limitations of the equipment being operated. Basic construction methods and practices. Preventive maintenance procedures and practices.

Ability To:

Learn proper equipment operating procedures, methods and practices. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the public. Understands and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:

Lift and carry up to 80lbs; pulls, pushes or drags up to 80lbs.

* Walking or standing for an extended period of time.

* Operating assigned equipment and tools

* Working under harsh weather conditions

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

* making observations

* communicating with others

* reading and writing

* operating assigned vehicles, equipment and tools

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Experience:

Minimum age of 18, some common labor work and knowledge of common tools. Experience in the division or in a related field preferred.

Training:

Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at the level necessary for the successful job performance.

License and Certificates:

Completion of 8th grade required; High school degree or GED preferred. Must possess a valid Texas Drivers License.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Will be exposed to work outdoors in a construction site environment with exposure to loud noise, dangerous equipment and inclement weather conditions including extreme heat; will travel from site to site.
