JOB SUMMARY:
Under minimal supervision, the Field Tech II (Meter Reader) reads water meters and records readings as accurately as possible and performs meter box maintenance and related work as required.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Performs rereads and checks meters registering unusual consumption in response to citizen complaints or as directed by the Utility Billing Office.
* Completes work orders issued by the Utility Billing Office including turn-off and turn-on of water service, new installs, replacing faulty meters and transponders.
* Cleans out meter boxes and replaces broken meter box lids.
* Locates water meters for coworkers when unable to locate.
* Operate handheld device used to read and setup meters.
* Operates light vehicle and radio, and performs operator's maintenance on vehicle.
* Works closely with coworkers in training of new meter readers, route locations, and meter locations.
* Performs other related duties as requires.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
* Knowledge of Water Utilities operations; policies, procedures, ordinances.
* Knowledge of specifications for all size meters and metering sites, metering functions and related terminology.
* Skill in the maintenance of water meters and service connections.
* Skill in quickly ascertaining problems with malfunctioning meters and determining quick resolutions.
* Ability to use a variety of tools and equipment used in the trade.
* Ability to understand and visualize combined metering scenarios.
* Ability to respond on a scheduled on-call basis and to work extended periods of time under imposed emergency assignments.
* Ability to lift or exert forces equivalent to lifting up to 50 pounds.
* Ability to perform arithmetic calculations accurately.
* Ability to work in confined spaces under extreme weather conditions.
* Ability to operate a variety of equipment including, but not limited to PC, calculator, two-way radio.
* Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including, but not limited to carrying, data entry, dragging, driving, holding, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, seeing, sitting, sorting, standing, squatting, stooping, twisting body, walking and writing.
* Ability to communicate in English, clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
High school education or equivalent plus two (2) years of mechanical experience required. Must have a valid Texas Driver's License with a good driving record. Class D Water Distribution License, or obtain required license within one (1) year of employment. Communicate in English, clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Lifting loads up to 50 lbs. (measuring up to 36 ); carrying 50 lbs. (up to 15 feet); pushing/pulling 20 lbs.; gripping/rotating hand tools; stair/step climbing (accessing truck); walking; sitting; standing; near/far vision; accessing sewer structures (manholes, trenches, pipes, etc.); working in outside temperatures including excess heat, cold, and precipitation.
