Overview:
The Field Service Technician must be able to support the survey, design, engineering, implementation processes for Local Area Networks (LAN), Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) , Wide Area Networks (WAN) and a variety of other communications and information systems for the Department of Defense (DOD) and other Federal agencies throughout the country.
Candidate may work alone or as part of a team providing survey/design, installation, deinstallation, and relocation support including, but not limited to,site preparation and installation and/or removal of cabling and wiring systems, network hardware, wiring, power, grounding, terminal equipment, automated data processing services, and associated hardware and software.
Candidate must be able to identify all subtasks required to accomplish their assigned project, determine tools and material requires, prioritize work and develop a work plan that enables completion of assigned task within the allotted time. Candidate must have strong problem-solving, as well as the ability to interact well with both internal and external engineers, technicians, and customers.
Location: Candidate must be within commuting distance to Washington, DC.
Travel: This position will frequent travel (25% within the Washington, DC area and up to 75% nationwide).
Responsibilities:
- Supporting the survey, design, installation and integration of and troubleshooting of a variety of federal and commercial systems.
- Reading, interpreting engineering drawings and design packages; installation of network equipment including associated Cat5/CAT6 and fiber cable management equipment.
- Conduct site surveys in support of engineering/project management requirements for design, installation, integration, de-installation and troubleshooting.
- Performs adjunct installation, deinstallation, and relocation activities including, but not limited to copper and fiber cabling wiring systems such as bulk 50/100 pair, CAT5/6/6a/7, coax and Single/Muli-moder fiber including cable support and infrastructures (EMT conduit, cable trays, cable racks, J-hooks , D-rings etc), and associated hardware and software.
- Rack and stack patch panels to include grounding and power components as well as associated network hardware components as applicable.
- Establish and maintain rapport with customers, identifying solutions and suggesting methods/techniques to improve system deployments as required
- Communicates effectively in writing and verbally with all levels of technical and management personnel to keep customers and management team informed of current progress, schedule concerns, issues etc.
- Verify receipt of all equipment/ material received and resolve any deficiencies in product, serial number differences, and/or discrepancies in needed materials.
- Inspects and review hardware installation, wiring, power, grounding, system database validation, and other activities to ensure quality installation of services for the client. Ensure proper installation of engineered design IAW with drawings and engineering documentation.
- Ensure all installation work is properly documented. Prepare As-built drawings and update required spreadsheets.
Required Experience/Qualifications:
- 1-3 years experience in installation, repair, and maintenance of electronic based systems in the areas of voice and/or data transmission facilities
- 1-3 years experience with the installation of Telecommunications communications equipment including hardware, relay racks, cabinets, termination and testing of copper and fiber cable systems; EMT conduit systems, cable pathway systems (cable trays, cable racks, J-hooks or D-rings etc). voice and/or data transmission facilities.
- Self-starter, ability to manage tasks, schedules, work independently with little supervision and have exceptional interpersonal, client service and liaison skills.
- Excellent verbal/ written communications skills with customer interface experience. Able to effectively communicate and present project status and issues with assurance and confidence
- Must be able to multi-task, required to provide daily status/updates to program managers and customers.
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- OSHA 10 (can be completed post hire)
- Working knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC) and BICSI Standards
- Must have working knowledge of cable color codes and able to terminate 568A & 568B
Special Requirements/Security Clearance:
- Ability to pass a background check and obtain / maintain a DOD Secret Security Clearance
- Ability to obtain BICSII Level II Copper within one year of hire.
- Must have valid drivers license
- Dependable transportation for use within the Washington, DC area
- Ability to travel nationwide up to 75% of the time
Physical Demands:
- Must own your own basic telecom tools including: Punch down tool with a 66/110 blade, snips, wire strippers, hammer drill and basic hand tools; Personal Protective Equipment including: Safety Boots, Safety Glasses, hearing protection etc.
- Must be able to physically walk throughout the day and climb ladders
- Must be able to work on your feet for extended periods
- Must be able to lift 35 lbs, work overhead from a ladder and work below computer floors
