Ice skating coaches will deliver best-in-class on and off-ice instructional experiences to participants of the skating school, learn to skate, figure skating, hockey programs and will embrace and work within a collaborative team-coaching environment. They will provide professional and exemplary customer service to all guests, employees, and the community in adherence with Wollman Rink policies, rules and regulations to ensure a safe and world class environment.

Requirements:

  • Provide ice skating instruction to students as young as 3 years old using the Learn to Skate USA program, effectively instructing students in all elements of class level.
  • Provide specialized individual and group instruction to aspiring figure skaters or hockey players of all ages.
  • Maintain a positive, creative, upbeat class environment using age-appropriate games and props to keep students moving and engaged.
  • Develop lesson and practice plans and training goals for all group and private lesson students and communicate these plans with students and parents.
  • Attend coaching staff team meetings and actively participate in mentorship of assigned junior coaches.
  • Facilitate a positive learning environment with an emphasis on safety and community/team building.
  • Deliver outstanding customer service to all guests of Wollman Rink.
  • Develop a deep understanding of all skate school programs and arena offerings and promote wider Wollman Rink engagement among all students.
  • Assist with setting up and breaking down lesson area border wall before and after lessons.
  • Partner with staff, clientele and community partners, to maintain a positive, productive atmosphere conducive to the advancement of skating in New York City.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have advanced ice-skating skills, with a background in figure skating or hockey.
  • Prior experience working with children in a recreational, camp, sporting or academic setting preferred.
  • Prior experience coaching learn-to-skate, figure skating or ADM youth hockey.
  • Figure skating coaches: Familiarity with the Learn to Skate USA curriculum.
  • Hockey coaches: Familiarity and experience with USA Hockey's ADM program and curriculum.
  • Individuals who have a talent for connecting with very young children are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Must be highly reliable and punctual.

Certifications

  • Must hold current Learn to Skate USA coaching membership and compliance certification or be willing to obtain prior to season opening (October 23rd).
  • Figure skating coaches: Maintain current US Figure Skating coach compliance.
  • Hockey coaches: Hold USA Hockey coaching certification and attend regular professional development.
  • Must be US Center for SafeSport compliant or willing to obtain prior to season opening.

Work Environment

This position requires that work be performed on the ice, outdoors at Wollman Rink, but, attendance at events taking place at the rink or offsite, including on weekends and/or holidays, may be required.
