Basic Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree or equivalent, preferably in film or media studies.
* Minimum of two years handling 35mm and 16mm film in an archival or museum environment.
* Demonstrated working knowledge of FIAF standards and recommendations for the storage, handling, and projection of film along with proven knowledge of different video formats.
* Demonstrated experience working with a variety of film equipment, including projectors, flat-bed viewers, and hand-powered rewinds.
Position Description
* Performs accession duties, inspects material, and creates detailed condition reports and preliminary cataloging records for all film items.
* Performs film conservation duties for the HFA and other Harvard Library Repositories: re-houses material into archival enclosures; creates film can labels and assigns barcodes; adds countdowns and leaders; obtains footage counts and determines whether a film is missing footage; checks for physical damage; tests for and treats deteriorating acetate films.
* Inspects and compares multiple copies of films to determine the best quality print.
* Monitors and oversees film preservation supplies.
* Prepares material, monitors, and performs archival film scanning for preservation and access.
* Assists patrons and library repository colleagues in the viewing of film prints on flatbed viewers in the Film Preservation lab.
* Serves on Library Collections Emergency Team.
* Contributes to the overall goals of the department as appropriate.

Reporting to the Senior Time-based Media Conservator in Media Preservation Services of the Harvard Library, the Film Conservator is responsible for the processing, inspection and preliminary cataloging of new acquisitions and the preparation of outgoing films for the Harvard Film Archive (HFA) and other Harvard Library repositories. Assists in the planning and execution of collection-wide preservation projects for audiovisual materials. Prepares materials and performs archival film scanning. Assists patrons and library colleagues who need to view films.
