As required perform duties of Plant Operator A including operation and control of pumping stations, generators and related equipment.There are 2 Filtration Maintenance Person III positions in the Water Treatment Division. This position may oversee the work of others and fill the position of Plant Operator A when needed. This position reports directly to the Plant Chief Maintenance Foreman, Maintenance Foreman or an Operating Foreman as scheduled.Applications will be screened. Those qualified will be invited to participate in a written test, a performance test and oral interview. Candidates must successfully pass each component by 70% or better in order to proceed in the process.   • Performs technical, mechanical, hydraulic and plumbing maintenance and repair on various equipment.
  • Repairs and maintains diesel engines, pumps, valves and other plant mechanical equipment.
  • Repairs and maintains the mechanical functions of diesel generators, circuit breakers, synchronous and induction motors and other electrical equipment under direction of the Plant Electrician.
  • Performs a variety of machinist and millwright tasks in fabricating and installing various parts necessary for maintenance of a plant built in 1929. Operates lathe, boring mill, milling machine, and drill presses.
  • Uses a variety of regular and specialized hand and power tools in the performance of duties, including welding equipment.
  • Performs a variety of plumbing and steam-fitting tasks. Reads and interprets pressure gauges and operates a variety of test devices.
  • Performs all duties of the Plant Operator A position as a Relief Pumping Operator as scheduled.
  • Acts as lead worker and may oversee the work of others.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Job Requirements
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Two years experience as a Filtration Plant Maintenance II or considerable experience in repairing and maintaining stationary engines, large water pumps, boiler equipment, and varied other equipment.
  • Good mechanical aptitude.
  • Willingness to be trained on computer data entry for inventory and preventative maintenance purposes and to gain an understanding of the plants SCADA system.
  • Must be able to demonstrate self-motivation and a high level of responsibility.
  • Experience in lead worker responsibilities required.
  • Attendance record acceptable to management.
  • Minimum 2 years of machine shop training and related math classes and/or 4 years experience in machine shop work.
  • Ability to complete overhead crane operator training and forklift operator certificate.
  • Good understanding of hydraulic and electrical principles.
  • Must possess extended ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Knowledge of good safety practices and experience using personal protective equipment.
  • Once eligible, must obtain F-4 State of Michigan Operator Certification within (4) test cycles of hire.
  • Must possess a valid Michigan Driver's license.
  • Supplemental Information
  • Must use care and proper procedures in handling hazardous materials and electrical equipment.
  • Work may require frequent lifting of 50 lbs, bending, stooping, climbing and work in confined spaces. Requires work in tight work areas, requiring crawling over and under piping and at varying heights.
  • Must have ability to use self-contained breathing apparatus and/or respirator while serving as a member on an emergency response team. If chlorine gas is used on site, must participate in emergency responses as part of the Process Safety requirements for chlorine emergencies. Must also be able to use other P.P.E.
  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions or inside in uncomfortable conditions on a daily basis for extended periods of time.
  • Works in a facility with several dangerous chemicals including Chlorine Gas and/or Sodium Hypochlorite, Copper Sulfate or other copper-based products, Ferric Chloride, Lime, Fluoride, Carbon, Cationic Polymer, and Diesel fuel along with smaller amounts of various laboratory chemicals.
  • Must work in noisy environments. At times background noise may be too loud to carry on a conversation. Hearing protection must be worn under certain conditions.
  • Requires use of a motor vehicle frequently to reach associated sites.
  • Member of Hazardous Material response team.
