This class is distinguished from the Fire Apparatus Mechanic II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. This class may be used as a training class or the class may contain positions wherein employees perform routine tasks on a permanent basis and therefore remain at an entry level.Fire Apparatus Mechanic II This is the full journey level class in the Fire Apparatus Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Apparatus Mechanic I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned and from the Fire Apparatus Mechanic III by not being assigned the most complex tasks and duties and not being expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside, candidates have prior experience.Fire Apparatus Mechanic IIIThis is the advanced journey level class in the Fire Apparatus Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Apparatus Mechanic II by the performance of the most complex and difficult types of tasks and duties, including leading, training and reviewing the work of lower level classes. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all work unit procedures.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDFire Apparatus Mechanic IReceives immediate supervision from higher level staff.Fire Apparatus Mechanic IIReceives general supervision from higher level staff.Fire Apparatus Mechanic IIIReceives general supervision from higher level staff.Exercises functional and technical supervision over lower level staff.TYPE OF EXAMINATION: A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date.The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only. The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.Eligible List: You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list. The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions.SELECTION PROCESS: Final candidate selection will include list placement and will include hiring interview . Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, to include education and employment verification, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Essential Functions:
  • Diagnose mechanical problems in the various Fire Department automotive vehicles and related fire suppression equipment; perform major and minor overhaul and repair of fire engines, perform routine service, repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment ladder trucks, service trucks and emergency medical vehicles; work on both gasoline and diesel engines; perform maintenance and repair work on heavy-duty centrifugal pumps.
  • Assist in the training of fire fighting personnel in the operation, care and maintenance of engines, trucks and automobiles; assist in training lower level mechanic staff.
  • Assist in maintaining service and maintenance records of vehicles; assist in maintaining inventory records.
  • Test-drive, deliver, and retrieve vehicles which involve the driving of vehicles on public roadways.
  • Marginal Functions:
  • Estimate time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as needed.
  • May respond to fire alarms to maintain equipment in service.
  • May service and repair fire hydrants, disassembling and replacing worn or damaged parts.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Fire Apparatus Mechanic IExperience:Four years experience in the service and repair of cars, trucks and automotive equipment, including some experience in diesel and electrical and electronic systems repair.Training:Equivalent to graduation from high school.License or Certificate:Possession of a Nevada Class B Commercial Drivers License, as well as an N endorsement (Tank Vehicle) within 6 months of date of hire, and maintenance thereafter.Within six months of appointment, possession of the National Institute for Automotive Excellence (NIASE) certification in either engine repair or heavy-duty gasoline engines, and maintenance thereafter.Within eighteen months of appointment, possession of NIASE certification in brakes, and maintenance thereafter.     BENEFITSUniform Allowance
    • The City initially provides employees with uniforms. Thereafter, quarterly uniform maintenance allowance is currently $450.
    Tool/Equipment Allowance
    • Available for certain classifications.
    Retirement (PERS)
    • Eligible employees participate in the Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada (PERS). PERS, a statewide defined benefit plan, calculates retirement benefits based on 2.5 percent (current percentage for employees hired 1/1/10 and after) for each year of service, applied to the employee's highest consecutive 36-month average salary. PERS also requires that employees share 50 percent of the PERS contribution, which is implemented by reducing the City's salary ranges. The highest consecutive 36-month average salary is increased commensurate with the salary range reductions required by PERS.
    Deferred Compensation
    • The city offers a 457(b) Plan which is a government deferred compensation plan similar to a 401(k) plan. It offers both pre-tax and after-tax savings and investment options.
    Medical, Dental and Vision Health Insurance
    • Health insurance is currently provided by Las Vegas Firefighters Health & Welfare Trust. The City makes a contribution per employee per pay period to the health and welfare trust. Insurance start dates and premium rates are determined by the trust.

    • Year 1: 80 hours
    • Years 2-10: 120 hours
