This position is responsible for supervising the operations of the officers and station personnel at an assigned station and to serve as a working member during all emergency responses. Reports to the Fire Chief.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Responds to alarms and all fire and non-fire emergencies, such as structural fires, hazardous material spills, vehicle accidents, and various rescue operations, and emergency medical service calls. Provide basic life support services, using KED, AED, traction splint, stair chair, etc., while responding to calls or during special event operations.
  • Performs a variety of firefighting and rescue tasks; extinguishes fires, performs vehicle extrication, performs rope rescue, searches for trapped or injured victims; carries, positions, and climbs ladders; performs forcible entry at emergency scene; and operates fire stream nozzles.
  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff.
  • May direct and conduct fire investigations to determine cause and origin and works cooperatively with law enforcement agencies in arson cases.
  • Operates a variety of equipment in the performance of duties, such as fire rescue equipment, all fire department vehicles, radio communications equipment, fire extinguishers, various hoses and nozzles, various ladders, power tools, hand tools, and related equipment.
  • Leads a variety of firefighting and rescue tasks; extinguishes fire, performs vehicle extrication, performs rope rescue, searches for trapped or injured victims; carries, positions, and climbs ladders; performs forcible entry at emergency scene; and operates fire stream nozzles.
  • Reviews, corrects and approves information fire reports; prepares a variety of reports and logs.
  • Collects and records information for fire reports; prepares a variety of reports and logs; copies, maintains records, and transmits as appropriate; issues burn permits.
  • Directs and conducts daily apparatus and equipment inspections; requests the repair and replacement of faulty equipment, station facility, and apparatus.
  • Schedules and conducts monthly business inspections and pre-fire planning sessions; directs and conducts monthly hydrant servicing and flow testing; directs and conducts fire safety education.
  • Determines appropriate strategies for emergency incident response; determines the need for additional personnel or equipment.
  • Oversees assigned fire station; maintains adequate cleaning supply inventory, EMS supplies, and the general appearance. This responsibility spans all three shifts.
  • Operates a personal computer, audio/visual equipment, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, Internet, or other computer applications.
  • Provides information concerning requirements of fire codes and construction standards; responds to questions or complaints concerning inspections or code violations; discusses problem areas and provides possible solutions.
  • Creates/maintains positive public relations with the general public; provides information and education to the public regarding fire safety, fire prevention, and firefighting; conducts fire station tours and blood pressure checks for the public; installs smoke detectors; participates in parades and civic events.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
QualificationsQUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience:High school diploma or GED (or equivalent); supplemented by eight (8) years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.Licenses or Certifications:Valid State of Georgia driver's license; a current Georgia Firefighter certification; and a current Hazardous Materials Operations certification.Special Requirements: Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and an acceptable driving record. This position is deemed safety-sensitive and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.   • Skill in operating fire vehicles (i.e., automobiles, fire apparatus, and heavy construction equipment), requiring a standard Georgia Driver's License to perform normal and emergency-level firefighting duties.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force or more. Work requires ability to exert heavy physical effort, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials; may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. WORK ENVIRONMENTWork is performed in an outdoor environment.
