It is not the basis for or guarantee of a starting salary.Position Function:Under the general direction of the Fire Marshal, performs assigned duties necessary to assist with the enforcement of applicable City code of regulations, implementation, and coordination of fire inspections and education programs, and the promotion of City fire prevention initiatives and projects. Duties include but are not limited to, fire code enforcement, inspections, and plans review to ensure the enforcement of City Ordinances and Codes, and State fire codes (as applicable) related to all residential and commercial (new and/or existing) structures, and fire suppression infrastructure (e.g. pumps, hoses, hydrants, equipment, sprinkler systems, etc.).Essential Duties:
  • Performs assigned duties necessary to assist with the enforcement of applicable City code of regulations, implementation, and coordination of fire inspections and education programs, and the promotion of City fire prevention initiatives and projects. Duties include but are not limited to, fire code enforcement, inspections, and plans review to ensure the enforcement of City Ordinances and Codes, and State fire codes (as applicable) related to all residential and commercial (new and/or existing) structures, and fire suppression infrastructure (e.g. pumps, hoses, hydrants, equipment, sprinkler systems, etc.).
  • Assists Fire Marshal with citizen complaint resolution, inspections follow-up, corrective action guidance and follow-up, and the coordination and implementation of fire and fire safety educational and community awareness programs. Responsible for providing technical input to the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, and Building Inspections and Code Enforcement Divisions, developers, engineers, architects, and citizens to ensure all life safety codes are met and enforced. May be required to testify at court proceedings.
  • Responsible for the coordination and implementation of all annual service and maintenance of City fire alarms, backflow prevention, sprinklers, hood systems, and fire extinguisher equipment. Duties include, but are not limited to, record keeping, reports, compliance assistance to the Building Maintenance Division, inventory control, billing and/or invoices, procurement of equipment and supplies, etc.
  • Responsible for appropriate records retention and Open Records request fulfillment.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Environment:Duties are performed within an office, outdoor, and hazardous environments or settings. Exposure to dust, mold, noise, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, smoke, fire, electricity, toxic or caustic chemicals and/or fumes, mechanical and/or moving parts, high elevations, vibration, blood-borne pathogens, viruses, disease, confined space entry, dangerous buildings and the like commonly associated with fire and emergency response and rescue activities.Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
    • Required knowledge and experience are normally obtained through the completion of a curriculum resulting in either a High School Diploma or a GED.
    • Fire Safety Inspector I Certificate of Compliance is required within 60 days of appointment, and maintenance of this certification must be obtained for the duration of employment. Must be certified as a Public Safety Educator within one year of appointment and maintain this certification for the duration of employment. Must be certified by the State of Florida as Fire Safety Inspector II within two years of appointment, and maintain this certification for the duration of employment.
    • Must possess good oral and written communication skills.
    • Must be able to read and understand the Florida Fire Prevention Code, State Building and NFPA codes, OSHA regulations, and City ordinances and codes.
    • Must be able to communicate and present oneself professionally, and have the ability to successfully work with confidential information.
    • Has significant discretionary judgment in the performance of duties.
    • Thorough knowledge of commercial operations and related potential hazards.
    • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
    • Knowledge of fire prevention and safety education, and fire suppression methods, practices, and principles.
    • Ability to work under high demands, short time constraints, and pressure in a fast-paced work environment.
    • Ability to remain up-to-date on Federal, State, and City regulations, and Occupational Health and Safety standards to implement best practices and policies affecting department activities.
    • Ability to enforce codes and regulations.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with City and other public employees, public officials, contractors, consultants, businesses, and the general public.
    • Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds.
    • Ability to use Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). Must be able to utilize computer technology and become proficient in our current inspection software.
    • Must become a member of the Florida Fire Marshals and Inspector Association (FFMIA), and the Polk County Fire Marshals Association and actively participate in these associations.
    Other Requirements:
    • Must possess a valid Florida Class E driver's license.
    • Must pass post-offer pre-employment Drug Screen and Physical Examination, and applicable Background Checks.
    • Must be able to pass CJIS background check.
    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
