Salary: $28.09 HourlyLocation : Citrus County, FLJob Type: Full TimeJob Number: 25-08Department: Fire RescueOpening Date: 10/15/2024Closing Date: ContinuousGeneral Description The Fire Plans Examiner performs broad technical work reviewing permit application documents for construction, demolition, alterations, and repairs to ensure compliance with fire safety codes, ordinances, and laws, includingthe Florida Fire Prevention Code (FFPC) and relevant NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standards. This position reports directly to the Fire Marshal and collaborates with other departments as needed to complete inspections and reviews that contribute to the comprehensive countywide Fire Rescue Emergency Services program. Essential Functions
- Drives and/or operates a county vehicle or equipment and must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
- Reviews plans and construction documents for non-residential new construction, interior remodels, fire sprinkler systems, fire suppression systems, mechanical plans, fire alarm systems, architectural plans, site plans, firework displays, and other applicable projects to ensure compliance with the Florida Fire Prevention Code (FFPC), NFPA standards, and local fire codes.
- Conducts construction and site inspections for new construction, renovations, alterations, and demolitions in non-residential buildings.
- Performs state-required and requested fire and life safety inspections of existing buildings.
- Engages with builders, owners, designers, and the public to discuss and resolve fire safety issues or code noncompliance.
- Provides public fire safety education, training, and outreach programs as needed.
- Prepares detailed reports on plan reviews and inspection findings, submitting these to the Fire Marshal.
- Participates in various administrative tasks including, but not limited to, attending staff meetings, maintaining official department records, answering phone calls, and meeting with stakeholders.
- Assists Fire Rescue Command Staff in a confidential capacity, as needed.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements Education, Training, and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
- Associate's degree in a related field (e.g., fire science, public safety, engineering, or construction), preferred.
- Two (2) years of experience with a fire department as a fire safety inspector or fire safety plans examiner, or related experience, preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registration, Skills
- Valid Florida Driver License or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida.
- Valid State of Florida Fire Safety Inspector I certification.
- Requires ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups and the public.
- Excellent customer service skills, communication skills and strong attention to detail required.
- Must have strong organizational skills to plan, prioritize, multi-task and independently execute projects/tasks within specific deadlines while maintaining flexibility.
- Ability to effectively communicate (verbally and in writing) in a clear, confident manner using proper grammar.
- Requires ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups and the public.
- Must have strong working knowledge of computers and be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite of Products (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
- Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses:
- IS-100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS)
- IS-200.c: Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response
- IS-700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System
- IS-800.d: National Response Framework, an Introduction

- The job involves frequent lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
