Duties

* The duties of this position are for the full performance level. The duties at the GS-05 and GS-06 grade levels are the same but with closer than normal supervision.

* Respond to hazardous material/Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE) incidents surveying scene to stop/control the release.

* Operate a wide array of firefighting equipment to suppress fires.

* Respond to alarms and combats fires including rescue, involving structures, equipment, facilities, aircraft, vehicles, chemicals, fuel storage, ammunition storage, and brush fires.

* Communicate inspection findings including the types, location, and quantity of hazardous materials to the servicing fire department.

* This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

* This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience at the GS-05: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade and (2) operation of fire communications equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education Substitution: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study from an accredited college or university with a major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: You must have the specialized experience as described above, but less than one year; and you must have more than one year but less than the required education described above. You must compute the percentage of the requirements that you meet, and your total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education over one year by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Specialized Experience at the GS-06: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards and/or (3) operation of fire communications equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Specialized experience required for the GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment and (5) controlling hazardous material incidents. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Note: Education can only be substituted at the GS-05 grade level but not for the GS-06 or GS-07 grade levels.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: You MUST submit a copy of the following certification requirements certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board).
