Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.
This temporary position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located at the Leaburg Hatchery in Adair, OR. It is expected to last through April 30, 2025.
The goal of this recruitment is to fill the position at the Fish and Wildlife Technician (FWT) level. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the Fish and Wildlife Technician Entry (FWT Entry) ($3,218-$3,948/mo.) to apply, as the department may consider underfilling the position.
What you will do:
* Egg incubation and Fish rearing. Set up and sanitize incubation area and equipment to receive eggs. Receive eggs from other hatcheries or programs; treat and tray down in an approved manner. Prepare eggs for shipment or transfer. Set and maintain water flows to eye up eggs; monitor eggs for health and development, treat eggs as prescribed by a pathologist. Ready eyed eggs for hatching; determine when to shock, pick, clean up and treat; inventory and tray down eggs in appropriate containers. Set and maintain water flows for hatching and emerging fry; monitor for health, remove eggshells mortalities, monitor fry development to determine when to feed/pond. Set up rearing containers to receive fry or fingerlings. Set and monitor water flows. Clean rearing containers as prescribed by good fish culture techniques. Feed fish as directed with proper size, type and quantities of fish food; be observant of feed quality such as odors, color, texture.
* Operate special equipment such as: pickup trucks, lawn tractors, electric carts, emergency generators, fish pumps/lifts, gas/electric/air power tools, ATV's, forklifts and front-end loader. Unload, store and handle fish feed and ice. Assist other hatcheries and region as needed.
* Water systems maintenance and operations. Monitor and operate hatchery water systems: respond to emergencies, correct flow problems. Maintain the hatchery water system: cleaning of intake, protect from freezing, check and service valves and pumps as needed.

Working Conditions
* Requires feeding and caring for fish and their rearing containers, preforming maintenance and repairs of equipment and structures, liberations. Exposed to the extremes of weather often in or near water. Egg and fry activities (a damp cool environment often standing in and having to have hands in water), recording data and completing records, preparing reports, getting supplies, preforming maintenance and repairs of equipment (often unheated environment), construction activities (often unheated environment). Use of power tools and handling chemicals. Requires use of safety equipment.
* Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours.
* This position may require living on station unless housing is not available.
* This position may require working on an on-call basis.

Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience, however, we encourage you to apply even if you don't meet the qualifications as the department may consider underfilling at the FWT Entry level:
Fish & Wildlife Technician:
* An Associate degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture, Aquarium Science, Wildlife Technology or Agriculture; OR
* Eighteen months of experience in fisheries, fish culture, fish screens, care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming.
A higher level degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate degree.
Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry Option - Underfill:
* Minimum qualifications are not established for this classification (there are no minimum qualifications. Previous related experience is desirable).
Requested Skills:
* Using hand and power tools
* Using an Metallic Inert Gas (MIG), Plasma cutter, arc welder and cutting torches
* Forming, pouring and finishing concrete
* Operating heavy equipment (such as dump truck, boom truck, forklift and backhoe)
* Writing progress or technical reports
* Basic computer experience, Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word
* Knowledge and experience troubleshooting solar/electrical systems
