Job Description and Duties

Under the supervision of the Fish Hatchery Manager II, this position performs support at California Department of Fish and Wildlife hatcheries statewide. This job involves all aspects of fish culture such as: trapping, spawning, rearing, feeding, treating, transporting, recording data. The incumbent must be able to operate forklifts (with department training and certification per California State Law), fish pumps, feed carts, crowders, Class C trucks, and Off Highway Vehicles etc. Perform grounds, facility, and equipment maintenance. This position requires the possession of a valid commercial Class A Driver's License or the ability to obtain within one year of appointment.

This position is subject to Post and Bid but all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to Department of Fish and Wildlife employees currently in the classfication. Working Conditions

The incumbent will be required to work some holidays, weekends, evening or night shifts and special events. Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions (hot, cold, wet), around water, and uneven ground. This position will require occasional travel within the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.). Travel may include an overnight stay. State housing is not available. Wearing a prescribed CDFW uniform is required.

Special Requirements

Ability to swim at least 50 yards and to stay afloat at least five minutes; good physical condition; and ability to lift 40 pounds.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Experience working with fish or wildlife and some knowledge of plumbing, welding, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical skills. Basic math knowledge and experience in collecting, organizing and entering data; a high degree of personal initiative; ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment and think and work creatively; possess both written, verbal, critical thinking and communication skills. Be familiar with small engines and power equipment.

Attend structured training and safety sessions, maintain safe work practices, and monitor safe equipment and materials use.

Aptitude for fish and wildlife conservation work, construction, repair, and maintenance work; willingness to live and work throughout the State, and work unusual hours and on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays; willingness to do heavy manual labor, work in adverse weather conditions, and to wear a prescribed uniform; keenness of observation; tact; and reliability.

Ability to work and communicate with others, be cordial and respectful.

Will have almost daily contact with members of the public, Answer questions and describe activities. Will record daily hatchery visitor use. May participate in Classroom Aquaria Program, fairs, and local events.
