This Fisheries Observer will conduct onboard and alternative platform observations of commercial gillnet trips to collect fisheries dependent data. The data collected by the observer program informs adaptive management decisions used to mitigate endangered species interactions in the state's gill net fishery. In addition, the data are used in stock assessments and to monitor bycatch and effort in many of the other state fisheries. Observers collect biological data (e.g., length, weight, species, etc.), fisheries effort data, record and proof data collected by the observer program, use appropriate protocols to handle sea turtles and other protected species, and communicate effectively with fishermen and other members of the public. Observers are provided excellent training, gain extensive field experience, and will have the opportunity to participate in other division sampling programs. The observers will trailer and operate boats on a regular basis, possibly in inclement weather and work both as a member of a dynamic team and independently. Position is subject to frequent travel including overnight stays.

Key Responsibilities:

* Collection of commercial and recreational catch and bycatch data, protected species interactions, and fishing gear characteristics

* Code and proof collected data

* Work independently scheduling trips with fishers

* Operate and maintain boats, trucks, trailers, and sampling equipment

* Travel overnight to observe fishing trips

The Division of Marine Fisheries

The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is responsible for the stewardship of the state's marine and estuarine resources. The DMF's jurisdiction encompasses all coastal waters and extends to 3 miles offshore. Agency policies are established by the nine-member Marine Fisheries Commission and the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. Recruitment Range: $40,000 - $42,848

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL the following:

* Experience with species identification.

* Experience collecting biological data.

* Experience operating and/or maintaining boats and/or trailers.

Applicants who were born after January 1, 1988, must be compliant with the requirements for boating safety education, General Statute 75A-16.2.

Associate's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
