The Division of Habitat & Species Conservation is comprised of six Sections and two offices. The Wildlife Diversity Conservation Section (WDC) is seeking qualified applicants for the Northwest Regional Species Conservation Biologist.
This is a full-time career service position, eligible for all career service benefits, including health insurance, paid time off, and contribution to the state of Florida retirement system.
This position is located in the Northwest Regional Office in Panama City Florida. No alternative office locations are considered at this time. Full time or partial telework is not available.
Description of Duties: The individual in this position will serve as the Regional Biologist in the WDC Regional Operations Team for the 16-county Northwest Region. This is an exciting opportunity to positively influence wildlife conservation within the panhandle, lead a talented team of dedicated staff, and work collaboratively with partners and the public to achieve conservation goals.
This position is responsible for coordinating and conducting all aspects of nongame wildlife conservation, including leading or supporting the implementation of conservation programs for state and federally listed species in the panhandle. This is a supervisor-level position which requires recruiting, training, and supervising staff, budget management and purchasing, directing work priorities, and ensuring staff compliance with agency rules, policies, and procedures.
The person in this position will frequently engage with cooperators, stakeholders, and the regulated community, through proactive communication, presentations, and media responses; develop partnerships with external agencies, conservation organizations, and volunteers, and serve as a catalyst to promote conservation of imperiled wildlife and landscapes; develop and implement projects to benefit imperiled wildlife and Species of Greatest Conservation Need, coordinate with teams to manage designated Critical Wildlife Areas, and apply for and manage grants related to priorities in the region.
This position will occasionally provide technical assistance to Commission staff, other agencies, and the public regarding state listed species Permitting Guidelines, nongame wildlife, and Florida's State Wildlife Grants Program; provide Subject Mater Expert (SME) review and comment on projects potentially impacting state listed species in the region; engage in land management reviews and provide SME input on species and habitat management documents; and serve as a member of the NW Regional Leadership Team.
This position is responsible for identifying and leveraging opportunities that benefit focal species and habitat conservation efforts. Current focal species include Florida bog frogs, gopher frogs, reticulated and frosted flatwoods salamanders, imperiled beach-nesting birds, beach mice, Panama City crayfish, and bats. Focal habitats include upland forests, pine flatwoods and dry prairies, bogs, sandhills, coastal uplands, beaches and coastal dunes, rivers and streams.
Knowledge, skills, abilities: The successful applicant will be self-motivated, display strong leadership qualities, and have a commitment to natural resource conservation, customer service, and the mission of the FWC. Additionally, the applicant will demonstrate:
* Knowledge of conservation biology principles and the ability or experience to apply such, especially as it pertains to Florida's native wildlife
* Working knowledge of native wildlife species in NW Florida
* Experience or knowledge of habitat restoration work
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including written and verbal
* Ability to effectively supervise and lead a team of seven biologists
* Ability to develop and maintain partner relationships and influence regional priorities
* Strong organizational and project management skills
* Knowledge of and ability to communicate and apply relevant state and agency rules, regulations, and policies
* Ability to manage and review budgets and learn state purchasing rules and procedures
* Skilled in use of Microsoft Excel and GIS technology
* Ability to design, implement, and manage projects and create reports
* Operation and basic maintenance of a variety of vehicles and equipment including 4WD truck, ATV, motorboat, GPS units, and hand tools
* Able to conduct moderately strenuous outdoor activities under sometimes harsh climatic conditions
* Ability to schedule travel and field work when necessary
