General Statement of Duties Closing Date: This position closes Monday, December 23, 2024. This a paid internship for the spring of 2025 in Recreation and Parks for a current college student enrolled in a health, fitness, exercise science or related program field. We can also accommodate students who may need to earn academic credit for their program. This internship will provide insight into the field of community recreation and fitness. For information on the operations and functions of each department click here: . Essential Duties Fitness Intern II- This is an internship for pay for the spring of 2025. Applicants must be current college-level students rising junior or senior pursuing a degree in field relevant to the internship. In addition, we can work with the selected student who is in a program that requires a for-credit internship. The applicant should provide the requirements of such in their cover letter and desired location submission. Desired Area of Study: Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Physical Education, or related field Desired GPA: 3.0 or better Desired Student: College-level junior or senior undergraduate Desired Coursework: Anatomy, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology Certifications Desired: CPR/AED and First Aid (Training can be provided if necessary) Preferred Certifications: Personal training: ACSM, NSCA, NASM, AFAA, ISSA, ACE and Group Exercise: ACE or AFAA Work Hours: Shifts will be scheduled within these hours: Monday-Thursday (7am-9pm), Friday (7am-8pm) and some weekends, Saturdays (8am-5pm) and Sundays (1pm-5pm). Rate of Pay: $16.00 per hour. We can work with the selected students should their program require an internship for academic credit. Work Location : Eastern Henrico Recreation Center: 1440 N. Laburnum Avenue, Henrico, VA 23223 and/or Deep Run Recreation Center: 9910 Ridgefield Parkway, Henrico, VA 2323. This internship will require travel to numerous facilities and/or parks within Henrico County. Students selected will be able to utilize a county vehicle providing that they have a current Virginia driver's license and a satisfactory driving record and will complete necessary forms to drive a county vehicle and online driving training. The facilities include fitness centers with cardiovascular and strength training machines and free weights. They also have a group exercise studio for structured group exercise classes and/or personal use. In addition, there are outdoor walking and running trails, multipurpose fields, a football field (EHRC), playgrounds, spray ground (EHRC), a pump track, and an exercise trail (Deep Run). Depending upon educational background and the certifications held, the internship may provide for experiences in the following opportunities:
- Perform daily administrative duties under the supervision of the Facility Manager, Fitness Coordinator, or other Fitness Instructors.
- Learn how to utilize the Recreation and Parks software ActiveNet and how to create programs, schedule programs and events, take reservations, e-mail communication to members, create class attendance sheets, and other ActiveNet functions relative to the position.
- Attend scheduled meetings with supervisor and managers
- Teach group fitness classes in different styles: step, strength, circuit, Pilates and or yoga, TRX, HIIT, cycle, kickboxing, cardio kickboxing (based on the certifications of the selected candidate).
- Leading of Small Group Training (Instructor Shadowing if certifications are not held by the selected candidate)
- Assist and or perform:
- Wellness and fitness promotions and external events at other sites.
- Writing newsletters, marketing materials, articles, bulletin board information for members.
- Membership creation process.
- Conducting new member orientation (for those 13-15 year old or as requested).
- Educating members concerning safe exercise techniques
- Ensure members adhere to the facility policies and procedures
- Customer Service duties with new, current, or potential members with fitness and facility-related questions
- Aid members - spotting and equipment usage
- Maintenance and cleaning of the equipment for the safety of members
- Complete opening and closing procedures
- Operation of AV equipment
- Manage equipment closet
- Other duties as assigned
Internships are intended to provide the intern with basic experiential exposure to a field of interest. The intern must bring a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities and finish the internship having gained basic experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field. Minimum Qualifications
Education: Pursuing a college degree in a field relevant to internship or post-secondary vocational/technical training in a trade or craft that is relevant to the internship; GPA of 3.0 or better; prefer a college student in the junior or senior year of the relevant degree program;
Experience: Completion of courses in relevant degree or vocational/technical program; relevant job or volunteer experience; OR: any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities relevant to the internship.
