A global automotive company seeking a skilled Fixture Design Engineer proficient in CATIA V6 to design and model custom fixturing solutions for prototype vehicle builds. This role involves creating efficient, manufacturable fixtures for holding vehicle parts during welding and other assembly processes. You will work closely with production and design teams to ensure fixture designs meet functional requirements and are easily integrated on the floor. Ideal candidates bring strong experience in automotive or aerospace fixture design, a background in machining and fabrication processes, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to streamline prototype production.
Responsibilities:
- Design and model weld fixtures and other fixturing solutions in CATIA V6 to support prototype builds and assembly processes.
- Integrate body part construction, datums, and welding requirements into fixture designs to ensure precise positioning of vehicle parts.
- Conduct layout checks with team members and weld floor staff to verify fixture functionality and adherence to requirements.
- Coordinate with suppliers for quotes and ordering, utilizing the Ariba system to manage purchasing and data transfer.
- Collaborate with production teams to ensure fixtures are user-friendly and meet their needs on the weld floor.
- Research and suggest improvements to fixturing and assembly processes, focusing on manufacturability and efficiency.
- Support other departments as needed, including aerodynamic testing and interior model evaluations, by designing specialized test models and evaluation parts.
- Assist with additional prototyping and fixture needs as requested by other internal teams.
Required Skillset:
- Minimum of 3+ years in fixture or related design work, ideally in automotive, aerospace, or similar environments.
- Proficiency in CATIA V6 (with some knowledge of V5 a plus), capable of working independently and mentoring others in best practices.
- Understanding of automotive body part datums, machining, and fabrication processes.
- Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure precision in designs.
- Basic knowledge of electrical and mechanical principles to support fixture integration.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- BS in Engineering or a related discipline.
- Bonus Skillset:Previous experience in an R&D environment.
