Job Description:
Director/Senior Director of Digital Science Solutions

Cambridge, MA USA

Flagship Pioneering is a bioplatform innovation company that invents and builds platform companies that change the world. We bring together the greatest scientific minds with entrepreneurial company builders and assemble the capital to allow them to take courageous leaps. Those big leaps in human health and sustainability exponentially accelerate scientific progress in areas ranging from cancer detection and treatment to nature-positive agriculture.

What sets Flagship apart is our ability to advance biotechnology by uniting life science innovation, company creation, and capital investment under one roof in a way that is largely without precedent. Our scientific founders, entrepreneurial leaders, and professional capital managers are each aligned around an institutionalized process that enables us to innovate and transform for the benefit of people and planet.

Many of the companies Flagship has founded have addressed humanity's most urgent challenges: vaccinating billions of people against COVID-19, curing intractable diseases, improving human health, preempting illness, and feeding the world by improving the resiliency and sustainability of agriculture.

Flagship has been recognized twice on FORTUNE's “Change the World” list, an annual ranking of companies that have made a positive social and environmental impact through activities that are part of their core business strategies, and has been twice named to Fast Company's annual list of the World's Most Innovative Companies.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a visionary and pragmatic individual to join our Digital Science team and drive the next phase of development for Flagship's Digital Backbone for Scientific Research. This role will be responsible for developing and managing a comprehensive product catalog to accelerate science, leading the evaluation and selection of commercial and open-source tools and datasets, and building custom tools as needed. The successful candidate will have a background in life science, computational biology, software engineering, AWS, and product management.

Who you are:

The successful candidate is someone with a deep background in life science research, data science, and software engineering. If you start each day reading the latest bioRxiv papers, digging into git repos, or submitting your new pipeline to nf-core, this may be a position for you.

In addition to scientific and technical abilities, you have a product manager mindset. This means being a gregarious networker, focused on metrics-that-matter, and a great collaborator to rapidly deliver value to our portfolio companies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Relationship Management: Manage relationships with data science teams in close collaboration with IT Business Relationship Managers across our portfolio, and external vendors to identify needs and emerging trends.
  • Product and Service Catalog Management: Oversee the Digital Science team's product catalog for our Digital Backbone, ensuring that all offerings are accurately represented, up-to-date, and prioritized.
  • Solution Development: Design, create, and deliver software solutions, leveraging a variety of conventional, cloud, and AI technologies and consulting partners.
  • Data Sourcing: Identify, evaluate, and ingest high-value third-party datasets that can accelerate scientific advancement of our companies.
  • Technology Awareness: Maintain cutting-edge awareness of developments in commercial and open-source methods, vendors, and solutions that could benefit our companies, ensuring we remain at the forefront of innovation.
  • AI Collaboration: Collaborate closely with our AI/ML groups and our AI Engineering team to identify opportunities for applying AI-backed solutions to complex scientific problems.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in a relevant scientific or technical field (e.g., bioinformatics, computational biology, data science) with 8+ years industry experience.
  • Strong background in agile software engineering.
  • Expertise in Python, AWS, workflow orchestration tools (e.g., NextFlow, AirFlow, MLFlow), DevOps, containers, HPC, and databases.
  • Proven track record of developing and managing digital product portfolios and service catalogs.
  • Strong understanding of AI and machine learning applications in scientific research.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and drive projects to completion in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Strategic thinker with a passion for innovation and a deep understanding of the biotechnology landscape.

Values and Behaviors:

We are seeking individuals with an entrepreneurial spirit, strong communication skills, and comfort working in and contributing to a dynamic and cross-functional team environment. The level of the role will be commensurate with the education and years of experience of the identified candidate.

Flagship Pioneering and our ecosystem companies are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity or Veteran status.

At Flagship, we recognize there is no perfect candidate. If you have some of the experience listed above but not all, please apply anyway. Experience comes in many forms, skills are transferable, and passion goes a long way. We are dedicated to building diverse and inclusive teams and look forward to learning more about your unique background.
