Job Description:Amherst College invites applications for the Fleet Coordinator/Mechanic position. The Fleet Coordinator/Mechanic is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $24.00 per hour - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.The Fleet Coordinator/Mechanic participates as part of the Landscape and Grounds Department team to maintain and improve the vehicles and equipment of the campus operations departments with the broader goal of providing great customer service to a diverse community and an excellent experience to those who visit and use the College facilities. Principal responsibilities include facilitating the maintenance, repairs and service of campus operations vehicles and equipment on campus. The position is required to maintain contracts and repairs for all vehicles and equipment, as well as oversee purchase reporting, procurement and inventory management of all parts used to repair the equipment fleet. Requires proficient computer literacy, attention to detail, problem-solving, and communication skills, as well as the ability to multi-task and function efficiently under extreme conditions. This position supports grounds operations. This is considered an essential position, meaning the employee is expected to report to work even if the College is closed for weather-related or other reasons. Some overtime, weekend and occasional shift change work is required.
Summary of Responsibilities:- Work with dealerships and repair shops to perform major maintenance and repairs. Routine safety inspections of all vehicles which includes state inspections. Routine work is performed internally. Effectively communicate within a diverse community, contributing to the intentionally inclusive culture
- Repair work is performed internally when the coordinator has the ability. Safety, cost and timing all impact the ability to perform repair work internally. Repair work can include using lifts, welding equipment and other mechanical equipment and tools
- Administrative duties including purchase reporting, cost tracking, repair tracking and maintaining PMs of regular maintenance
- Operate equipment in support of grounds operations, including hoisting equipment and DOT vehicles
Qualifications:Required
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Vocational certification in automotive repair
- Valid driver's license
- Valid DOT medical card and 2A hoisting licenses or ability to acquire within the first six months of employment in the position
- Successful credentialing is required in order to operate college vehicles
- CORI check and drug and alcohol tests
- Five years of experience maintaining mechanical equipment/vehicles
- Familiarity with maintaining motorized equipment: lawnmowers, snow blowers, weed trimmers, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to track and maintain a budget
- Demonstrated ability to use Excel as well as other computer programs proficiently
- Strong communications and customer service skills
- Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, including ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Attention to detail
- Pre-employment physical/lift test
Preferred
- One year of related vehicle and equipment use
- General background pertaining to operating mechanical equipment safety
- Trade school degree in vehicle or equipment maintenance
