The fleet mechanic works with a team to ensure the safety of our bus and maintenance fleet. The Livonia Public Schools Garage is a full-service, twelve-month, all-season repair facility. Technicians perform everything from regular vehicle inspections and service to engine, transmission and drive train repair. In addition, engine and transmission electronic diagnostics are performed with the latest software programs. DISTRICT OVERVIEW: Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,900 staff members, serving approximately 13,300 students pre-K - post secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center, and 1 vocational and transition center in the school district. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $175 million, with a state funding of $9,608 per pupil. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The following is a list of minimum qualifications for this position, any one of which may be waived by the Administration in exercising its prerogative to determine qualifications.
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Must have an ASE or State of Michigan certification in vehicle repair
- ASE or State of Michigan certification in School Bus & Med/Heavy Truck repair is preferred. Required to pursue these certifications upon hire by obtaining at least two certifications within a two year period.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
- Must have working experience with shop service and repair equipment; electrical test equipment, and computer diagnostic equipment.
- Knowledge and experience with Allison Doc, Cummins INSITE, OTC Encore, Ford IDS and General Motors software programs is preferred
- Must have CDL with class B with an S&P endorsement or willingness to obtain upon hire
- OEM Air-Conditioning experience is preferred
- Experience with Cummins engine equipment is preferred
- Experience with Ford and General Motors diesel, gasoline & propane engines in light trucks and buses is preferred
- Experience with propane fuel systems & propane powered engines is preferred
- Wrecker/towing experience is preferred
- Experience with heavy and light lawn equipment is preferred.
MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs in a timely and professional manner, all aspects of vehicle repair and preventative maintenance.
- Conducts regular vehicle inspections and service, including but not limited to engine, transmission, and drive train.
- Utilizes electronic diagnostic software programs from Allison,Cummins, Ford & General Motors.
- Conducts daily repairs such as electrical, body, brakes, chassis, steering components, wheel end, and tire replacement and repair.
- Performs major and minor electrical and electronics repair, hydraulic and air brake repair, exhaust repair, drive train and suspension repairs, as well as other duties as assigned by Garage Supervisor or Garage Leader.
- Performs basic welding (Oxy Acetylene and Wire Feed).
- Works flexible hours during Michigan State Police inspections, inclement weather, etc.
- Arrives punctually and maintains a good attendance record.
- Maintains a spirit of cooperation while working with others in a team environment.

- Executes other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Garage & Transportation Supervisors.
POSITION INFORMATION Normal work hours are 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 12 months a year. Normal garage hours are between 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. during the school year and 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the summer. Hours may be subject to change.
- Class I position (if qualified/certified).
- Subject to 24-hour emergency calls.
- All tools are provided by Livonia Public Schools.
