Job Summary:The Phlebotomist - I is responsible for performing blood draws, labeling and storing specimens, and ensuring the accurate handling of patient samples for laboratory analysis. This role involves direct interaction with patients to explain specimen collection processes and performing tasks related to blood and other specimen collections. The Phlebotomist will ensure the safe and proper handling, transport, and storage of specimens while maintaining high standards of accuracy and patient care.Key Responsibilities:
  • Blood Draws: Perform blood draws from patients, using both straight and butterfly needles, ensuring accuracy and patient comfort.
  • Specimen Collection & Handling: Label specimens, centrifuge as needed, and store according to established procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Patient Interaction: Clearly and courteously explain the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collections (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients.
  • Techniques: Demonstrate and perform venipuncture techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
  • Order Accuracy: Fully understand physicians' orders, matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, and ensuring 100% accuracy.
  • Specimen Preparation: Centrifuge, split, label, and store specimens as required by the test order, ensuring proper temperature and container specifications.
  • Documentation: Record and maintain patient information and specimen data in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Transport and Storage: Package specimens for transport, ensuring they are stored at the correct temperature and transported according to protocols to preserve specimen integrity.
Required Qualifications:
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Phlebotomist, with proficiency in performing blood draws and venipunctures.
Skills:
  • Proficient in using straight and butterfly needles and handling color-coded tubes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) for documentation and data management.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling and documentation.
  • Patient Care: Ability to clearly explain procedures to patients and ensure their comfort and cooperation during specimen collection.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Additional certifications or specialized training in phlebotomy is a plus.
Certifications:
  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician from an accredited organization (e.g., ASCP, NPA) is preferred.
