The Flow Cytometry Core Facility, an ISAC recognized Shared Resource Lab at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine is looking for an IntermediateSenior level Flow Cytometry Core Specialist. The Flow Cytometry Core Facility provides investigators state of-the-art technologies to provide cutting-edge services to a broad array of investigators, both inside and outside UVA. We are looking for a team player with an understanding of flow cytometry and the ability support the maintenance and quality control of flow cytometers and cell sorters, operating/troubleshooting of the flow cytometers, analyzing flow cytometry data, and providing oversight for core clients carrying out flow cytometry experiments.
Flow Cytometry Expertise
* Successful candidate must have practical and theoretical knowledge of flow cytometers and cell sorters and be able to work independently.
* Ability to operate analytical flow cytometers in the flow core; Experience with Attune NxT, Imagestream MKII, Fortessa, and Aurora analytical flow cytometers preferred. Knowledge of CyTOF mass cytometry a plus.
* Independent operation of cell sorters; Experience on the BD Influx, BD Aria, or Sony MA900 preferred.
* Experience performing Luminex Bead based assays and protocols a plus.
Customer Service
* Assist core clientele in the acquisition and analysis of flow cytometry samples
* Assist clients with the design of flow cytometry experiments, including appropriate choice of instrumentation as well as fluorochromes appropriate for the experiment.
* Ability to assist clients with data analysis and interpretation using various software packages; FCSExpress, IDEAS, FlowJo, OMIQ, Astrolabe and other flow cytometry data analysis packages.
Instrument Maintenance
* Ability to perform daily and monthly QC on core instrumentation. Interpret and report deviations of QC. Perform routinemaintenance and troubleshooting of core instrumentation.
Teaching and Education
* Assist Lab Director and Staff in the delivery of Flow Cytometry Training Courses, and Workshops.
* Plan and develop new technologies and new applications for flow cytometry.
* Stay current with new technologies and developments in the flow community through research, attendance of conferences, and workshops.
* Ability to effectively train and communicate with clients on the use of flow cytometry analyzers, cell sorters, and data analysis interpretation.
General Lab Skills
* Perform calculations for preparation of lab solutions and reagents.
* Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
* General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
* Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: 4 years of experience. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 8 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
