ALAMOSA COUNTY, Sheriff Department, Food Service TechnicianREPORTS TO: Food Service ManagerFLSA STATUS: Non-ExemptSALARY RANGE: $19.22 to $23.12 DOEDATE ADOPTED: July 2023CLOSE DATE: December 6, 2024JOB SUMMARY: Performs institutional cooking work involving the preparation of a large volume and variety of food. Prepares meat, vegetables, and other foods for Alamosa County Detention Center.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (The following are illustrative of essential functions to perform duties and responsibilities of the job. - Familiar with preventive and protective cooking skills.
- Performs assigned duties.
- Responds to changes in dietary needs.
- Supervises trustees in Manager's absence.
- Familiar with and follows safety practices.
- Studies applicable State and local health regulations, laws, and ordinances with regard to assigned duties.
- Follows departmental policy and procedure.
- Prepares soups, cooks' meat by grilling, frying, boiling, broiling, roasting, deep frying, or barbecuing.
- Washes, stores and cooks' vegetables; prepares salad dressings, salads, and all breakfast items; cuts and wraps meats for future use.
- Makes bread and desserts, including pastries, cakes, and cookies.
- Operates, monitors, cleans and maintains kitchen equipment such as milk machine, dishwasher, fryer, stove, and oven.
- Follows standard recipes for preparation; tests cooked foods to determine if properly cooked and seasoned.
- Serves menu combinations according to menu or special orders.
- Washes dishes and cleans the kitchen and dining area.
- Maintains supply of food, kitchen supplies, cookware, trays, glasses and utensils.
- Wraps and stores leftover food, and restocks salad bar and storeroom.
- Receives and records produce, meat and dairy product deliveries, and assists in ordering the same.
- Performs related work as required.
- Show up for work on time and ready to work.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge
- Knows the departmental policy and procedure.
- Knows how to maintain kitchen equipment.
- Can follow standard recipes
Skills:
- Can read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manual.
- Speak effectively with co-workers and supervisor
- Can prepare food by grilling, frying, boiling, broiling, roasting, deep frying and barbecue.
Abilities:
- Ability to work in a Detention Center
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to work schedule to meet all the obligation of the position
- Ability to work independently or in a team
- Ability to follow the policies and procedures of the County and the Sheriff's Office
- Ability to meet the physical requirements listed below
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- One-year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
