JOB SUMMARY:

In support to the forage-livestock systems program, Dr. Liliane Silva seeks highly motivated candidates for a Forages Technician position to work under her program. The Forages Technician will support and assist with forage and soil data collection, processing, preparation and analysis. The individual will also support facility and experimental areas planting, maintenance, and infrastructure development (e.g., temporary fence building for studies), data entry and assist with organization of educational activities developed under the forage-livestock program. Other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:

70% - Essential - Support and assist with soil and forage sample collection, processing, preparation, and analysis. Activities will include but are not limited to harvest forage samples, taking soil samples, taking additional forage, animal performance and soil related measurements, weighing and grinding samples and sample preparation for analysis, data entry, and collecting additional samples and data as required.

15% - Essential - Facility and experimental areas maintenance: repairs, cleans and provide maintenance and organization to the field and laboratory facilities and storage of samples. Assist with experimental areas maintenance, fence building, among others. Additional duties may be assigned.

15% - Essential - Support for data collection and educational activities: supports data collection as directed by project leader (s). Assist with organization of workshops and educational activities under the forage-livestock program.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education - High School or Equivalent

Work experience - in a related health care setting or in a clinical or research laboratory setting; or 12 semester hours of academic training in biology and/or chemistry; or registration as a Certified Laboratory Assistant by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or an equivalent registry; or successful completion of a formal program of instruction for laboratory assistants at a hospital or academic institution.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Education - This position is open to high school students, undergraduate students or individuals seeking flexible work hours.

Interest in agriculture, forages, animal production for high school students. Undergraduate students or those holding a bachelors degree then degree in Agronomy, Soil Science, or Plant Sciences, or related disciplines

Experience - Relevant experience with instruments and techniques. Experience with farm, livestock and/or forage management.

COMPENSATION INFORMATION

Anticipated Hourly Rate: $13.00

Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL

Normal Operations

Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
