DescriptionForensic Scientist 1CICONIX, a Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) specializing in military and Veterans healthcare, is seeking a Forensic Scientist 1 to assist the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (AFMES) provide medical-legal investigations, forensicanalysis, and pathology services for U.S. military personnel, DoD civilians, and eligible individuals.Job Overview: As a Forensic Scientist 1, you'll play a crucial role in the analysis of biological materials, utilizing DNA typing technologies to support routine casework and special projects. Your responsibilities include managing forensic evidence, maintaining accurate records in laboratory systems, and preparing essential documentation with precision. Additionally, you will contribute to program development, participate in educational activities, and support innovative research projects aimed at enhancing the capabilities of forensic science.Key Responsibilities:
- May perform as a DNA Technicians and/or Evidence Custodian.
- Assist in program maintenance and development at the direction of their designated supervisor.
- Perform investigative studies on biological materials using DNA typing technologies; carry out DNA typing casework in support of routine casework and special projects; and support the logistical or resource management activities of the DNA Registry.
- Participate in the organization and presentation of educational activities.
Duties:
- Accession of forensic evidence in the Laboratory Information Management System (LISA), maintain accurate and complete chain of custody for evidence, responsible for data entry into LISA and the Armed Forces Medical Examiners Tracking System (AFMETS), preparation of correspondence/documents ensuring proper format, mathematical correctness, grammar, punctuation, and spelling, and preparation & editing of recurring reports regarding case status and case tracking.
- Prepare reagents and maintain documentation of reagent prep and Quality Control testing in accordance with SOPs. Perform laboratory house-keeping activities such as preparing common laboratory reagents, maintaining appropriate stock levels of expendable supplies and maintaining a clean environment within laboratory work areas.
- Perform service casework involving nucDNA and mtDNA typing and profiling procedures. Support validation projects focusing on systems with increased sensitivity and discrimination power and advanced development of automated systems.
- Support research projects focusing on various research projects to include population data basing and working to increase sensitivity, discrimination power, and automated systems for casework applications.
- Desired knowledge and experience in filing techniques; administrative typing; preparing and editing technical or general documentation using various software packages such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel and Windows; transcription of documents, data entry, and preparing and editing management support documentation.
- May perform as DNA Technicians and/or Evidence Custodian.

Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's (or its equivalent) degree in biology-, chemistry-, DNA forensic science or related physical science.
