TITLE: Forester DEPARTMENT: Meskwaki Natural Resources
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops Forest land management plan to insure best land management in Forest rejuvenation, invasive species management and reforestation per culturally significant standard and with the BIA.
- Performs public relations activities to educate the public in forestry related areas; conducts field trips; writes articles/social media related to forestry.
- Assist in the reforestation of Tribal lands; determines species to be planted in alignment with cultural standards; assists in ordering and planting trees; inspects planted land for survival information; and prepares a planting map and record showing all plantings
- Assists department in the care of forests, grasslands and their proper maintenance; prepares management plans; and disease and insect control; develops planting or reforestation plans; appraises woodlands for possible
- Cooperates with other federal partners and supports Tribal Sovereignty in all work
- Guides the work of other field personnel in relation to forestry, invasive species and reforestation management.
- Oversee the effective execution of forestry work performed by contractors.
- Develops, follows and tracks grant statements of work, deliverables and budgets, to provide adequate funding.
- Determines equipment needs; engages in the maintenance of programmatic equipment.
- Conduct resource assessments and inventories of a complex nature. Perform data tracking with the development of Tribal natural resource databases, standards, and programs.
- Attend training conferences and meetings as appropriate to assigned responsibilities.
- Develops and promotes a fire prevention plan to protect Tribal lands and communities from fire damage; presents fire safety programs to various groups; distributes fire prevention materials; inspects and maintains fire tools; actively participate in the prescribed and wildland fire programs as a Certified Wildland Firefighter; maintain annual Wildland Fire pack test certification.
- Oversee use of minimal chemical application in forestry and grassland management; maintain EPA pesticide applicators license for department.

REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree in a Natural Resource Management, Forestry or Environmental discipline preferred. Degree and field experience in Forestry preferred.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of natural science as related to forestry and forest
- Knowledge of general conservation principles and practices in
- Knowledge of diseases and insects which may adversely affect woodlands, and their
- Knowledge of the current literature, trends, and developments in the forestry or forestry management
- Knowledge of technical and specialized equipment and tools used in professional forestry work (i.e., increment borer, compass, hagometer, sampling prism, saws, wedges).
- Knowledge of forest fire prevention and fire fighting
- Ability to effectively train employees in new forestry procedures and
- Ability to work out of doors under any type of weather condition, and to withstand physically demanding work, such as lifting, bending, hauling.
- Ability to safely operate specialized forestry equipment such as increment borer, compass, hagometer, sampling prism, saws, wedges, etc.
- Ability to inspect forested areas (on foot and by aerial photos) and detect signs of decay, deterioration, disease, etc.
- Ability to keep complete and accurate notes and statistical data to be used in
- Ability to prepare budgets for personnel and equipment expenditures and to prepare related
- Ability to inspect work done by contractors for completeness, accuracy, timeliness, adherence to standards/legal terms, etc.

- Prefer experience in working with Native American Communities and/or knowledge of the Meskwaki culture and the Sac and Fox Settlement.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and be insurable.

SALARY LEVEL:
- Salary Range: $49,836.80 - $84,884.80
