JOB SUMMARY

The Forklift Operator is primarily responsible for safely offloading and reloading cargo onto a 50-foot dry van using forklift or hand truck. The position also will also verify documentation matches freight description (e.g. type, weight, hazardous materials), using a current electronic or manual system.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies (e.g. pallets, straps, rope).
  • Recoup and repair damaged freight when necessary.
  • Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
  • Assist customers with freight and freight documentation as needed.
  • Perform hosting duties when required.
  • Comply with all applicable laws and regulations, as well as company policies and procedures.
  • Sort and organize freight before unloading and unloading, as necessary.
  • Attach identifying tags to containers or mark them with identifying information.
  • Read work orders or receive oral instructions to determine work assignments or material or equipment needs.
  • Stack freight in locations, such as transit sheds or in holds of ships as directed, using pallets or freight boards.
  • Exhibit exemplary attendance and punctuality.
  • Comply with company policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Based on the essential duties listed above, this position is considered safety-sensitive and therefore all work must be performed in accordance with quality standards and established safety procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of freight and warehouse best practices.
  • Knowledge of safe unloading and loading procedures.
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to lift/carry hand freight of varying weights several times a week.
  • The ability to lift dock plates weighing approximately 100 pounds, and to open trailer doors requiring approximately 75 pounds of lift force, up to several times per day or more.
  • The ability to bend, twist, squat, pushing/pulling freight throughout shift.
  • The ability to work independently and/or as a team member.
  • The ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
  • The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • The ability to understand written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents.
  • The ability to lift over 75 pounds of equipment and freight.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent is preferred.
  • A minimum of one year of previous dock and/or warehouse experience is preferred.
  • A minimum of one year of logistics experience is preferred.
