Position Summary:

The Foster Coordinator assists in the implementation of goals and objectives of the foster program. Working closely with the Foster Manager on daily operations of the foster program, the Foster Coordinator helps to ensure all aspects of the foster program are planned and running smoothly.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead by action and example to advance a culture of positivity, professionalism, trust, transparency, empathy, and excellence at Joybound.
  • Mentor, recognize, and assist the Foster Specialist and Foster Volunteers daily to ensure all animals under foster care are receiving Joybound's high standard of care.
  • Assist the Foster Manager with expanding the foster volunteer community through coordinating and participating in outreach and development events.
  • Nurture and grow relationships with foster volunteers, ensuring they feel supported and appreciated at all times.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to foster volunteers as needed.
  • Support the Foster Manager in developing training materials for staff and volunteers. Encourage foster volunteers to participate in continuing education opportunities.
  • Train staff and foster volunteers in Fear Free handling and low stress medicating techniques.
  • Work collaboratively with the Shelter to Service team to facilitate smooth operations between the two departments.
  • Assist with identifying, onboarding, and training volunteers to participate in the Shelter to Service Program.
  • Ensure timely communications with foster families and appropriate Joybound staff members.
  • Schedule appointments and coordinate shelter housing needs as appropriate for shelter guests in foster.
  • Learn and use the proper handling techniques for shelter guests and make certain all animals are handled humanely and with compassion, including those that may be sick or injured.
  • Learn, follow, and uphold the shelter's medical protocols and ensure foster animals receive proper and timely medical care.
  • Maintain an effective and high level of communication and cooperation with Joybound staff and fosters.
  • Have a thorough understanding of fostering and adoption procedures and protocols, as they apply to foster care providers and to the organization's responsibilities to fosters (medical care, adoptions, behavior assessments, etc.).
  • Assist in maintaining and updating the foster program's databases including Shelter Buddy and Volgistics.
  • Always treat people and animals with respect, contribute to effective teamwork, promote staff cooperation, and foster public relations beneficial to Joybound.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all information.
  • Comply with all Federal, State and local safety regulations and laws, as well as Joybound policies and guidelines. Follow established procedures governing safe work practices; and perform duties in a manner that assures the safety of oneself and others.
  • Perform duties in a manner which encourages attainment of goals, contributions and business for Joybound and its programs.
  • Promote teamwork, communication, and cooperation with all other departments.
  • Drive Joybound vehicles as assigned by supervisor.
  • Follow safe driving practices, obeying all traffic laws at all times when driving for Joybound business purposes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field preferred.
  • Experience of 2-3 years working with animal-related organizations preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Knowledge of shelter-related illnesses and treatments, experience in an animal shelter or veterinary clinic setting, and administering medications and vaccinations preferred.
  • Fear Free Certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet goals and objectives.
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to identify and assess issues and opportunities.
  • Experience working independently, as well as contributing effectively as part of a team.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-starter, facilitator, and organizer.
  • Ability to communicate with the public, volunteers and co-workers in a pleasant, courteous and tactful manner at all times.
  • Demonstrate maturity, good judgment and professional manner and personal appearance.
  • Comfortable and skilled in working with diverse staff, volunteers and community members.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft software programs (Word, Excel, Access) and veterinary software, preferred.
  • Must have a valid California Driver's License and must not have more than two at-fault incidents in a three-year period and no major at-fault violations in the last ten years, and must be insured.
  • Must be eligible and able to obtain the Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) from the California Veterinary Medical Board.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Physical/Environmental Requirements:

  • Work environment includes constant exposure to animals and animal allergens.
  • Push/pull moderately heavy objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Lift and move objects and animals weighing up to 40 pounds for short distances and humanely restrain animals when necessary.
  • Walk dogs weighing up to 150 pounds in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Kneel, bend, stoop, squat, reach above and below shoulder level, grasp and turn objects, stand, and/or walk frequently and repetitively throughout each shift.
  • Flex the neck upward and downward; twist the neck and the waist.
  • Dexterity to handle animals and small objects.
  • Assess medical and behavior changes in animals using a variety of techniques including, but not limited to, visually and audibly.
  • Sit for long and short periods of time while using a computer.
  • Tetanus and rabies inoculations are required or must be waived.
  • Drive a vehicle.
  • Hours:

    Full time: 40 hours per week. Daily reporting hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department. Weekend work, and holidays may be required. Periodical hours may be needed to cover vacation and illness of other co-workers.
