About the Bard Early Colleges (BECs)
Through a tuition-free, credit-bearing college program in the liberal arts and sciences with robust supports, Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) schools help high school age students, particularly those at risk of not completing postsecondary education, access, afford, and complete college more prepared for the next steps in their academic or civic life, or in their careers. At BHSEC Newark, students have the opportunity to earn up to 60 college credits and an associate in arts (A.A.) degree from Bard College, concurrently with a high school diploma from the Newark Board of Education (NBOE).
Position Description:
Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) Newark, a partnership between Bard College and the Newark Board of Education school district (NBOE) in Newark, NJ, invites applications for full-time faculty positions in the English Department to serve in the leadership role of Department Chairperson.
The responsibilities of the Department Chair will be to coach our faculty community members, to facilitate the creation of effective curricula, to conduct teacher/faculty evaluations, to provide support with administration of district, state, and College Board testing, and to supervise our Humanities programs and faculty. The Department Chair will also lead staff development sessions and will direct our Writing and Thinking program. Attendance at district meetings and trainings is also mandated.
All literature specialties are welcome, although expertise in African American, Caribbean, and/or Latino Literature is especially desirable. Successful candidate will supervise the English, History, and Art departments, coach faculty in the Humanities, ensure the curriculum and State standards are followed, prepare evaluations as required. The Department Chair should be well-versed in DEI-related concepts and have a commitment to advancing equity in education by fostering faculty understanding of the importance of reducing potential barriers to student inclusion.
Experience in leadership roles is needed. Experience in teaching formal writing is also desirable. The Department Chairperson may be asked to teach or provide coverage for a class, depending on school and faculty coverage needs. Additional specific chairperson duties consistent with specific contractual terms of employment also exist.
Compensation: This is a NBOE position. The salary range is $92,000 to $132,344

Qualifications
+ New Jersey Department of Education Supervisor Certificate, OR New Jersey Department of Education Standard Principal Certificate
+ New Jersey Department of Education Certificate in Supervisor (0106) OR 0200 Principal Standard (0200)
+ Master's Degree from an accredited college or university
+ Minimum of three (3) years successful experience in teaching the related content area or related experience
+ Knowledge of New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for curriculum assessment and instruction
+ Successful candidate will supervise the English, History, and Art departments, coach faculty in the Humanities, ensure the curriculum and State standards are followed, prepare evaluations as required
+ High school teaching experience, and/or experience working with youth is required
+ We are seeking educators passionate about their fields of study and committed to advancing equity through rigorous curricula made accessible to students with varied academic backgrounds
+ The successful applicant for this position must be committed to teaching classes at both the high school and college levels
+ In addition, the chosen candidate will be expected to participate fully in the life of the school, including student advising, club advising, and committee service
+ Interest in working with high school age students who are completing a college-level course of study is desired
+ We are seeking candidates with a strong commitment to equity and social justice and desire to open up opportunities for underrepresented students
+ Candidates must understand cultural difference and purposefully help to uplift ideas from underrepresented groups to improve the equity balance in education
+ A commitment to reducing and an openness to learning about potential barriers to inclusion are needed
