Full-time Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

Job Description:

Under general supervision, performs skilled and manual labor work in the operation of the City's plant and lift stations to treat wastewater and maintain plant equipment and grounds to comply with State permits. Work requires significant interpretive judgment within prescribed standards and procedures.

Assist with the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant and lift stations; operates large and small trucks; routinely inspect maintain and replace electrical wires, components and equipment; assist Lab Technician with sample collection and analysis; perform preventive maintenance and cleaning on equipment; maintain grounds and buildings; perform custodial work such as cleaning and mowing; use gas detection meters, voltmeters and other test devices to comply with confined space requirements prior to entry; implement Lockout/Tagout procedures when necessary; enter and log plant operation data and lift station operating hours reporting results to supervisor; assist in training new operators; utilize computer to retrieve and complete work orders; maintain required certifications; participate in on call rotation. Performs overtime as required and performs other duties as assigned.

Determine the cause of system malfunctions and to apply remedial actions. (Daily)

Inspect, maintain and replace electrical wires, components and equipment. (Daily)

Maintain equipment to produce quality treated wastewater. (Daily)

Enter, exit, and work safely within confined spaces. (Multiple times weekly)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Work Type: Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects

Climbing/Balancing: Climb inclines and ladders, uneven surfaces, balance required

Walking: Extensive amount required

Stooping/Bending: Frequently

Stand/Sit: Sit about 20 percent of the time

Reaching: Frequent, overhead as well as horizontal

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Ability to read and comprehend technically written material.

Ability to listen to and apply information and instructions.

Ability to organize information for concise written records.

Ability to perform mathematical calculations accurately.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma/GED with general maintenance experience, electrical experience preferred; ability to obtain a Nebraska Class I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification within one year; possession of or obtain a valid Nebraska commercial driver's license (CDL Class B) with tanker and air brake endorsements, within three (3) months of appointment.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS:

This position has a thirty (30) minute response time by way of the most direct route from the employee's permanent residence to the employee's assigned work site and within posted speed limits.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDS USED:

Telephone, two-way radio, test equipment, hand and power tools, ladders, vehicles, trucks, tractors/loaders and riding mowers.
