Overview
Gas Technician I - Maintenance & Operations are responsible for the construction, maintenance and operations of the City's gas distribution system.
Responsibilities
* Keep crew truck clean and assist with inventory of parts and supplies to keep the truck stocked
* Clean parts and tools and perform daily maintenance and/or calibration of equipment
* Use small hand tools, tapping and stopple equipment
* Perform semi-skilled and common labor work such as paint and/or wrap pipe, cutting and threading pipe, pipe-fitting and assist in other pipeline maintenance as required
* Prepare tap cards and/or various inspection reports and documentation in accordance with Department procedures and/or regulatory requirements
* Assist in pressure tests, purging and putting in service new and existing gas mains in the city Gas distribution system
Performs intensive manual labor tasks including digging and backfilling ditches, shoveling up to 15 pounds of weight, standing/ walking up to 5 hours at one time
Operates line locating equipment and volt meters for taking pipe-to-soil potentials
Installs or repairs mains, services, and meter loops. Removes and/ or exchanges gas meters as part of maintenance work tasks
* Perform plastic pipe fusion with the use of poly fusion and electro fusion equipment
Operates a 1 ton truck, 2 1/2 ton crew truck, 3yd dump truck, pickup truck, ditchers, air compressors, and welding equipment
Inspects and operates backhoe, trenching machine, air compressor, and other semi-heavy maintenance equipment
Perform leak surveys using leak detection equipment such as combustible gas indicator (CGI) or (GMI) or RMLD
* Complete proper forms, log books and documentation on maps
Performs mowing, edging,, trimming and cleanup of all Gas Department yard areas
Assist with the maintenance and operations of all principal gas valves in the City system. Work on chart recorders and run chart routes throughout the City Gas Distribution system
Assist with the installation and maintenance of large volume gas meters. Helps load meters weighing up to 800 lbs on truck and helps place meter in position at installation location, including preparing pipe fittings and assisting the welder with line-up
Under supervision, monitors and adjusts district gas pressures staying within safe operating limits; operates gas control valves to alter gas flow during emergencies and other gas related projects
Responds to emergency leak calls and gas odor complaints. Check for leaks at meters, regulators and on customer premises. Inspects and lights customer gas appliances
Maintains and controls odorizers at City Gate Stations making sure adequate odorization is kept throughout the system. Works on chart recorders and runs chart routes throughout the City Gas Distribution system
Overhauls, inspects and repairs designated regulators and relief valves in accordance with the rules and regulations of the TRRC; maintains accurate records
Performs maintenance on gas regulator stations including building and grounds
* May be asked to perform other duties as assigned
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
* Non exempt - Full-Time
* Non rotating 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; must be available to work additional hours as needed

Minimum Qualifications
* High School/ GED
* No experience

* A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire
Required within six (6) months
* Must be certified to fuse poly pipe

Basis of Rating
A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
