A General Duty Deputy serves the community by performing court and building security, prisoner transports, investigating crimes, apprehending criminals, enforcing laws, responding to calls for service, and performing proactive and reactive patrols within Dakota County. * Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, or other closely related field.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates must pass ALL recruitment and pre-employment requirements listed below to become a General Duty Deputy. Candidates who are unable to successfully pass the requirements below will be removed from further consideration.
* Educational/Experience Qualifications: Upon request, candidates must be able to produce appropriate documentation regarding their current status with the P.O.S.T. Board.
* Interviews: Candidates will be asked to complete a series of interviews; this may include phone interviews, oral board interviews, and/or interviews with the Chief Deputy & Sheriff. If you pass this interview process, a conditional offer of employment may be extended.
* Background Check: The background check includes an electronic packet designed to speed up the process and create efficiency. Candidates who pass the background check will be asked to complete the final two steps.

* Represents the Sheriff's Office in a positive, professional manner.
* Builds and maintains positive working relationships.
* Builds effective relationships with the public by attending community meetings, giving educational presentations, etc.
* Meets the standards of dress in accordance with policy and procedure.
* Understands and complies with policy and procedure to include Sheriff's Office memorandums, directives, and notices.
* Recognizes, responds, investigates, and enforces violations of criminal, civil, and traffic laws.
* Performs proactive activities and responds promptly to calls for service.
* Maintains radio protocol in normal and stressful situations.
* Demonstrates knowledge of geographic locations in assigned areas.
* Adheres to proper arrest procedures and warrant confirmations.
* Operates vehicles in an efficient and safe manner.
* Maintains equipment to ensure it is in good working order and immediately reports equipment failures and takes proper steps to alleviate the problem.
* Follows security procedures while transporting inmates, civil commitments, and suspects.
* Obtains pertinent information from suspects, witnesses, or victims by applying appropriate interviewing techniques.
* Submits concise and accurate reports in a timely manner.
* Utilizes and understands commonly used forms, computer programs, and applications.
* Maintains officer safety and situational awareness.
* Follows evidentiary procedures as required by identifying evidence and handing it appropriately to maintain evidence integrity.
* Communicates feedback and pertinent information to supervisor.
* Provide credible and truthful reporting and testimony as needed.

All General Duty Deputy staff must be able to perform the core duties listed above, regardless of their work unit. Unit specific duties and expectations in Transport, Court Security, Patrol, School Resource Officer, Parks, Investigations, and Civil will be reviewed with and assigned to staff upon hire or movement into the unit.

Candidates for employment with Dakota County Sheriff's Office must be able to comply with Minnesota Administrative Rule, 6700.0700 Minimum Selection Standards, including all candidates shall be a citizen of the United States or eligible to work in the United States under federal requirements.
All visible tattoos will be reviewed and recommend to the Sheriff if they should be allowed. Tattoos may require covering if they are determined to be unsightly, offensive or a job assignment requires it. Visible tattoos on the ears, head, face, neck or any portion of the hand area are prohibited.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a number of locations based on your assignment. Those areas include, County office buildings, jail facility, transport vehicles, and in patrol vehicles. Occasional out of state and overnight travel is required for courts and prisoner transport. Lifting requirement of over 100 pounds on an occasional basis. Exposure to hazardous physical conditions may exist and could include things such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, and vibration; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; hazardous materials such as chemicals, body fluids; work-space restricts movement, occasional intense noise and environmental temperatures may occur on the job. Equipment used may include, but is not limited to, computer, printer, telephone, copy machines, squad car, radar, Alco-Sensor, DataMaster DMT-G, digital recorder, squad camera, first aid kit, defibrillator, oxygen, handgun, rifle, handcuffs, electronic control device, baton, and chemical agents. Additional physical/mental requirements that occur may not be listed above but are inherent in performing the position's essential functions.
