Job Description:

Primary Purpose:

Performs general maintenance and repair services of building structures and their mechanical, electrical, and sanitary systems throughout the district. Assists with maintenance of grounds.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

High school diploma or GED equivalent (Recognized by the Texas Education Agency or regional accrediting agency)

Shall be subject to testing for use of alcohol or controlled substance that violate law or federal regulations

Must have a driving record that is acceptable according to minimum standards adopted by DPS

Safe driving record verified by Texas Department of Public Safety (meets and maintains liability coverage eligibility)

Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by employee.

Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Knowledge of basic construction and routine maintenance and repair procedures

Ability to communicate effectively

Ability to use hand and power tools

Ability to work independently

Ability to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds

Experience:

One (1) year of experience in commercial and public facilities

Experience working various trades, equipment, and tools

Organization Management

The general maintenance technician manages administrative, fiscal, and facilities functions responsibly through activities such as the following:

Inspects building exterior and interior, playground equipment, and grounds.

Detects and reports needed major repairs on building structures and their systems, including lockers, furniture, and equipment.

Completes repairs as requested on work orders or by maintenance supervisors.

Organization Improvement

The general maintenance technician promotes efforts to improve the school or organization through activities such as the following:

Performs maintenance and repairs of district facilities, including but not limited to, repairing woodwork, replacing electrical switches, fixtures and motors, painting, repairing, and replacing plumbing fixtures and drainage systems, roof repairs, replacing broken glass, and other facility improvements.

Installation, including but not limited to, door and window assemblies and hardware, including window glass and screens, cabinetry, ceiling and floor materials.

Cleaning activity, including but not limited to, window cleaning and pressure washing of exterior buildings.

Parking lot striping and parking lot signage installation.

Assists with mowing and detailing of district grounds.

Assists with relocation of furnishing, such as desks, tables, chairs, file cabinets, etc.

Moves, installs, assembles, and repairs all school furniture and playground equipment, as needed.

Hangs pictures, mirrors, whiteboards, bulletin boards, projection screens, towel dispensers, soap dispensers, and other items.

Communication and Community Relations

The general maintenance technician promotes a positive tone for school or community relations through activities such as the following:

Establishes and maintains open communication with DVISD staff.

Uses effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Use of DVISD electronic communications (e-mail) to communicate with multiple stakeholders.

Carries out customer service expectations set by the Department of Maintenance and the district.

Professional Growth and Development

The general maintenance tech provides leadership in professional growth and development through activities such as the following:

Attends training and orientation to improve job skills.

Attends meetings and professional development as required.

Qualities of a General Maintenance Technician

The general maintenance technician exhibits qualities such as the following:

Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job.

Responds to emergency calls when requested.

Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.

Operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.

Completes assigned work in a timely manner.

Commitment to working well with others and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, school personnel, and the public.

Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.

Complies with District policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.

Complies with the standards of conduct as set out in Board Policy DH (Legal) and (Local) and with any other policies, regulations, and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, or standards.

Performs other duties as assigned by the administration.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Equipment:

Including, but not limited to, power tools (drill, saw, etc.), hand tools, welder (gas and electric air), concrete mixer, pressure washer, parking lot striper, mower, weed trimmer, blower, garden tools, forklift, pallet jack, and light truck or van and other equipment applicable to the position.

Working Conditions

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Works prolonged or irregular and extended work hours to include holidays and weekends.

Able to respond effectively and appropriately with emergency situations.

Works with frequent interruptions.

Strenuous walking, standing, climbing, pulling pushing, reaching, heavy lifting, and carrying.

Works outside and inside, on slippery and uneven walking surfaces, and ladders.

Exposure to: temperature extremes, humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, and biological hazards.

Maintain emotional control under stress.
