JOB SUMMARY:Responsible for the daily operations of a dining unit or department on the KU campus, the Manager leads through a hands-on work ethic, conducts performance conversations immediately and often, facilitates a feedback culture, trusts but verifies high expectations, and upholds KU Dining's brand standards. The Manager is the leader of guest services, food quality, and safety, ensuring employees follow all department policies and procedures. The Manager also ensures the unit's availability for largescale events, organizational committees, and initiatives promoting KU Dining's brand.SUPERVISION RECEIVED & GIVEN:Reports directly to the Assistant Director, supervising both full time and part time employees.IN THIS ROLE YOU'LL GET TO:Quality:
  • Role model consistency and determination when executing strategies and business plans
  • Align all actions with current KU Dining goals and initiatives.
Managing People:
  • Oversee impactful hiring, training and job performance evaluation, creating a retention focused culture.
  • Provide direction to staff, ensuring timely compliance with KUMU policy, training, and disciplinary actions.
  • Lead a feedback culture focused on achieving KU Dining goals and initiatives
  • Take responsibility for all employees' activities.
  • Establish healthy communication channels through regular meetings, feedback, and onsite coaching.
Cost Consciousness:
  • Identify and monitor key financial indicators within unit to positively drive the business
  • Collaborate on and execute the annual budget, explaining variances and providing solutions.
  • Minimize waste and excess inventory; conserve resources.
  • Effectively follow KU processes for cost of goods sold and expense management
  • Utilize budgeted sales to effectively manage labor when scheduling to the needs of the business
Customer Service:
  • Anticipate and meet customer needs while meeting KU Dining brand standards of food quality and presentation standard.
  • Uphold a customer service philosophy, ensuring a positive customer focused attitude among all staff.
  • Exhibit a consistent positive attitude, creating a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Effectively manage difficult customer/client situations.
Problem Solving:
  • Proactively utilize information to identify problems and implement solutions
  • Develop alternative solutions to meet company defined goals within the unit
Organization Support:
  • Role model the behaviors that support the culture and business objectives
  • Hands on leadership to support the business and drive for results
  • Inspire trust, working with integrity, and treating all with respect and positive communication.
YOU WILL ALSO:
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director/Director.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn food preparation, holding, and serving methods.
  • Knowledge of health, sanitary, and safety standards in food service. General Managers are expected to teach and uphold all state, local, and brand standards related to health and safety.
  • Ability to ensure a team can follow all brand standards, recipes, and processes put in place by KU Dining.
  • Ability to maintain a friendly disposition and dedication to serve the general public in all situations. The General Manager is the brand ambassador of KU Dining to our staff and our students at KU.
  • Ability to perform above average physical requirements of food service work. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and may be asked to walk or stand for the entirety of a shift. General Managers must be comfortable leading by example and role modeling excellent work for the team. This can include food preparation, cleaning, and serving throughout a shift. They must have a team-oriented can-do attitude.
  • Must schedule selves and others to the needs of the business. General Managers are required to work a minimum of 40 hours during breaks and summer and may be required to work 55+ for the first few weeks of the semester or as business needs dictate. General Managers are required to work all shifts, opening, mid, and closes weekly to ensure stellar operations during all day parts.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or Accredited GED equivalent.
  • At least 5 years in a fast paced, high volume operation, with proven experience in a lead or supervisory role.
  • Experience creating and managing budgets between $1 million and $2 million annually.
  • Experience with various types of large kitchen equipment.
  • Proven customer service experience.
  • Experience with computer systems used in food service operations, including Microsoft applications.
  • Current ServSafe certification or ability to become certified within six months.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 5 years of lead management experience in a fast paced, high volume retail cash sales operation.
  • 3 years of P&L accountability.
  • Full-time employment with the Union Corporation is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check prior to being able to begin work.
