Job Description:

IVIRMA is seeking a Temporary- Genetics Counselor (Remote) to join our growing team in our Genetics department. You will be responsible for working collaboratively with the Lead Genetic Counselor. This is a responsible position that must work with minimal instruction or direction and must demonstrate good analytical and problem-solving skills.

Candidates must have ABGC certification. State Licenses in NJ, PA, CA, FL or WA - Preferred

Hours: 8:30-4:30 Monday - Friday EST

Targeted Start Date: December 2024

Responsibilities:

  • Provides genetic risk assessment and counseling to patients or couples who are being seen for preconception counseling.
  • Provide genetic counseling to patients post PGT-A, PGT-M, PGT-SR testing.
  • Obtain and review medical and family histories, based on the referral indication, and document the family history using standard pedigree nomenclature on a case by case basis.
  • Coordinates and review results received from PGT testing laboratories with patients. Provide insight on testing results to providers and nursing staff.
  • Coordinates with patient's insurance providers to determine the correct laboratory to which samples should be sent. Also communicates anticipated cost of prospective tests directly to patient after investigation with the patient's insurance provider and appropriate laboratory (also depends on specific test being sent).
  • Facilitates patient decision making on prenatal screening vs invasive prenatal diagnosis; Has advanced knowledge in available tests (examples: first trimester screening, cell free DNA testing, and microarray testing).
  • Assists patients in understanding the risks/benefits and alternatives of invasive testing options (CVS versus amniocentesis). Able to provide information to patients sufficient to assist physicians with the consent process prior to procedures.
  • Fills out laboratory requisitions for genetic testing on behalf of provider
  • Advises appropriate carrier testing and counseling for recessive genes common in particular ethnic groups (i.e. Jewish genetic diseases panel, hemoglobinopathies) or because of positive family history or as per recommendations of ASRM and ACMG.
  • Counsels patients via telephone or in person regarding results on major or minor impact diseases identified by multiplex or other panels (NGS).
  • Facilitate case preparation for single gene disorder testing which includes data entry, review of clinical genetic reports from outside centers and sample coordination.
  • Remains abreast of new and emerging technologies in IVF, fetal medicine and prenatal diagnosis.
  • Provides clinical evaluations and counseling to patients/couples with suspected or diagnosed genetic disorders.
  • Develops policies and procedures involving all levels of the Genetic Counseling Department in responding to questions and answers regarding genetics testing and counseling.
  • Participate in case conference with genetic team to review patient cases.
  • Plan, organize and conduct public and professional education programs on medical genetics, patient care and genetic counseling issues.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the organization's core values and incorporates them into the performance of duties.
  • Provides support for Oocyte Donation Program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Graduate degree from an accredited genetic counseling program - required
  • ABGC Certification or a “Board Eligible” status - required
  • Please note: The successful candidate must become certified within five years of graduation date from Master's program. You must maintain certification during tenure. Incumbent must also re-certify every five years per ABGC policies and procedures
  • Current state licensure or application upon eligibility - required
  • Experience using an Employee Medical Records (EMR) System - preferred
  • Microsoft Office Suites (Outlook, Excel, Word) - required
  • Strong interest in reproductive genetics and working within a clinical diagnostic laboratory setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated expertise in continuous quality improvement and results orientation.
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills.
