Geographic Information System (GIS) TechnicianDepartment: Information Services Employment Type: Full Time Location: Main Office Reporting To: Information Systems Manager Description Maintains geographic data and representations for all utility systems (maps, computer interfaces, geo-databases) by performing the following duties. - Uses GIS software and hardware tools to produce system maps and new subdivision maps that accurately depict electric, fiber, gas, water and wastewater systems.
- Supports GIS Specialist with current and upcoming GIS related projects
- Creates GIS Web Apps and Web Maps through ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise (Portal)
- Works with Dispatch and Engineering work groups to maintain accurate, current utility system mapping and geographic data by field verifications, address checks and incorporating other city improvements.
- Makes any adjustments or changes needed by Engineering or other work groups.
- Maintains data and files original plots, record drawings, work orders and associated data.
- Maintains geographic databases and default system views.
- Maintains SQL links to the geographic database for use with OMS, GIS mapping and web interfaces.
- Maintains and collects GPS data for critical electric, fiber, gas, water and wastewater system infrastructure.
- Trains other employees in proper GIS operations.
- Must be able to Create and maintain derivative GIS databases including functions such as domains, subtypes, joins, relates, and attachments.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Bachelor's Degree (B.S.) in GIS, Geography, Engineering, CIS or a related field of study. Entry-level position; no work experience is required.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare routine technical reports and business correspondence.
- Ability to interact and effectively communicate with supervisors, customers and co-workers.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Outlook, Word & Excel) and computer operating systems to perform job tasks. This includes using software applications for email, word processing, database tracking and spreadsheet applications. Extensive knowledge of GIS software applications required to support users.
- Ability to apply some judgement to carry out detailed and well-established procedures and methods, such as completing detailed forms and recording complex data.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, percentages and decimals.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry such as area, circumference and volume to practical business situations.
