Description of Work Unit

The Colorado Natural Heritage Program ( CNHP ) is Colorados primary biological conservation information center housed within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University. CNHP is a key player in Colorados conservation of open lands and maintains the only centralized conservation database in Colorado that includes plants, animals, and natural communities. The staff consists of approximately 30 highly experienced biologists and information managers with expertise in inventory, research, and monitoring of Colorados flora, fauna, plant communities, and conservation issues. CNHP serves a wide variety of users including federal, state and local agencies, consultants, environmental groups, non-government organizations, private landowners, and the public. CNHPs annual revenue is approximately 2 million dollars and is generated from contracts and agreements through CNHPs partners and clients. CNHP generally works on over 40 conservation projects per year. Position Summary

A Geologic Resources Inventory Reports Team Lead position is available with Colorado State University and the Colorado Natural Heritage Program to be located in the Geologic Resources Division of the National Park Service which is based in Lakewood, Colorado. The incumbent of this position is a member of the core team responsible for carrying out the Geologic Resources Inventory where many parks lack sufficient scientific staff to collect, manage, and synthesize scientific information needed to manage geologic resources and geologic hazards. The incumbent leads the effort to develop geologic reports which help guide parks in the management of their most pressing geologic resource stewardship issues and aid in the interpretation of digital geologic maps.

The incumbent assists with the development and implementation of an intricate program of natural resource inventorying and related activities including data and information management, analysis, reporting, and outreach to address sensitive and complex resource management needs that are affected by a wide variety of issues within and outside the parks.

This position will be based in Lakewood, CO or remotely. Within easy reach are myriad trails for hiking, mountain biking, wildlife watching, horseback riding, and back-country skiing on a plethora of public lands, including nearby National Parks, Forests, and Grasslands, and countless local natural areas. Denver also has a vibrant cultural scene, with many options for enjoying theater productions, music events, annual festivals, museums, art galleries, restaurants, gardens, and more.

Position Minimum Qualifications

Expert professional knowledge of geology and geologic resource management on public lands.

Professional experience developing and reviewing reports for geologic resource management.

Mastery of scientific inventory project principles and research techniques.

Ability to effectively plan, coordinate, and provide leadership to a team of scientists, data managers, and technical specialists in all phases of complex, multi-year projects of various spatial scales.

Ability to manage long-term projects designed to inventory key geologic resources at park units.

Advanced professional knowledge and skill in geologic data analysis and synthesis to develop understanding of, and solutions to, geologic resource problems.

Knowledge of the laws pertaining to geologic resources.

Ability to prepare reports and journal articles of high scientific credibility, and to

share pertinent information effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.

Ability to make oral presentations that are well designed, informative, and clearly convey the intended message.

Must have a valid drivers license or the ability to obtain a drivers license by the employment start date.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred education is a Master of Science (M.S.) in geology.

At least one year of experience with geologic resource management in National Parks or other public lands.

Knowledge of geologic resource-related Department of Interior National Park Service Management Policies (2006) and service-specific manuals, instructions, and/or directors orders.

Ability to create or supervise the creation of science communication products from geologic inventory projects and disseminate appropriately.

Thorough understanding of laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines related to NPS natural resource inventory and monitoring and the protection of the nations natural and cultural resources.

Skill in oral and written communication in order to ensure that inventory reports are well written and easily understood.

Essential Job Duties

Job Duty Category1. Project management for Geologic Resources Inventory (GRI) reports

Duty/Responsibility

includes providing leadership, coordination, technical direction, and oversight to the development of park-specific geologic inventory reports:

a. Sets the schedule and priorities for GRI report production by consulting the GRI program lead and short-term action plan. Communicates the schedule and assignments to the reports team.

b. Ensures report content and format follows the existing template; updates and revises the template at least quarterly and communicates changes to the reports team.

c. Coordinates with park staff and reports team to host a kick-off meeting at the initiation of each report to inform park and seek information to be used in the report.

d. Tracks the status of reports in an existing tracking spreadsheet and schedules progress check-ins with writers and park staff to ensure the inventory project is fulfilling the program requirements.

e. Reviews draft deliverables and provides specific direction to report writers on needed revisions to ensure that technical geologic content and geologic policies are accurately presented.

f. Acts as peer-review manager, facilitating peer review of reports and other products as appropriate.

g. Manages production and distribution of GRI reports including publishing to the NPS DataStore, adding to the GRI Publications webpage, and distribution to parks and contributors to share results of inventory projects.

h. Coordinates with layout team to ensure all GRI reports are accompanied by a layout of the geologic map that has been reviewed by the GRI team and park staff.

i. Conducts project close-out functions.

a. Communicates with the Geologic Resources Inventory program lead on a weekly basis with project status and updates.

b. Submits a written monthly update to the GRI program lead that lists the status of all in-progress reports and layouts and the current activities of all report team members.

c. Hosts a monthly virtual meeting with the GRI reports team to share program updates and discuss team-wide topics of interest.

d. Responds to internal and external GRI report inquiries.

e. Develops reports-specific agenda for GRI (in person or virtual) annual team meetings.

f. Provides reports?specific content for use on public websites or internal SharePoint sites.

g. Provides reports-specific content for annual reports.

The GRI program is transitioning to a new program model, under a new name (Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory; GSRI ). The following duties will support the transition:

a. Assists the GSRI program lead in revising the GSRI short term action plan to ensure plan is reasonable considering current staffing level.

b. Review park-submitted geology and soil inventory project proposals with the GSRI program lead to develop a workflow for sorting projects between an in-house team and those requiring an external partner.

c. Participates in GSRI transition communication strategy including occasionally facilitating GSRI office hours and/or presenting transition information to inventory stakeholders (e.g., park resource managers, network scientists, regional staff).
