Applicant lists may be screened more than once.This position is part of the Materials Bureau team located at the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) General Office. The selected candidate will work closely with design engineers and scientists with a wide variety of expertise (including geotechnical, structural, environmental, and drainage) as well as lab technicians, drill crews, maintenance personnel, and construction personnel. Why does the job exist?To evaluate the geology and subsurface conditions of project sites and generate recommendations in support of design, construction, and maintenance of highway infrastructure including bridge foundations, soil and rock slopes, embankments, walls and retaining structures. How does it get done?Developing field exploration and lab testing plans. Using critical thinking skills to interpret the geologic site conditions and adapt exploration plans as necessary.Conducting geological mapping, geophysical surveys, and field logging of soil samples and rock cores extracted from boreholes. Assisting with geotechnical lab testing of rock and soil samples including compression tests, rock abrasiveness testing, and Young¿s modulus testing.Utilizing geologic maps and literature, field records, and professional judgment to provide interpretations and construction recommendations while taking into consideration design standards, site-specific requirements, and any unusual geologic conditions.Preparing geologic scoping reports and intradepartmental geology write-ups including but not limited to design recommendations supported by appropriate data; notes, tables, and specifications to be included in construction plans; and interpretations of conditions encountered during construction.Managing and maintaining the statewide rockfall database and identifying potential rockfall hazards through collection and analysis of field data. Evaluating rockfall hazards on New Mexico roadways and communicating recommendations for their mitigation or maintenance to District Offices thorough technical memos and intradepartmental correspondences. Who are the customers?The Geotechnical Section supports statewide design, construction, and maintenance projects in collaboration with Project Development Engineers (PDE), various technical support groups, and district personnel from across the state to serve New Mexico residents and the traveling public. Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will have preferred experience/education in the following areas:*Ability to learn through continuing education and hands-on experience, bachelor¿s degree in relevant field, and ability to support research and project ideas to better serve the traveling public.*Ability to collaborate and work in a multidisciplinary team.*Experience collecting and interpreting geologic/ geotechnical field data (including boring logs, geophysics data, aerial imagery and outcrop maps, inclinometers, and slope movement data) and geologic/geotechnical lab data (including particle size distribution/ gradation, plasticity, moisture content, and strength parameters).*Experience writing and reviewing technical reports and memos. Minimum QualificationBachelors degree in Geology, Geochemistry, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Chemistry, or Environmental Science, and two (2) years of experience directly related to the purpose of the position at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment RequirementsMust possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment. Working ConditionsPrimarily an office and lab setting with some field work and some statewide travel. Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. Some in-state travel and overnight stayed required. Outdoor field work required in all types of weather conditions.
